case trimmers

A few day ago on the MSN BPCR board (http://groups.msn.com/BPCR/messages.msnw) , in  thread “compression vs. OAL”, there was a mention of case trimmers.

IÂ’ve often wonder how did the Creedmoor shooters, buffalo hunters, etc., trim their cases. Or did they?

I can not recall any mention of this aspect of reloading by the late century Shooters or any post on this subject on the various BPCR boards.  I also could not find any information in the SellersÂ’ “Sharps Firearms.”

Anyone have any info?

What I have found is. I do not full length resize my cases after firing. I do not resize the neck either. For my 45-70 using black powder I just clean the case and reload it. With black powder loads you are not working the case much at all. I have shot some of my black powder cases in 45-70 over 15 times and they still do not need to be trimmed.
I am sure they had to resize there cases, but I don't think it was something that needed to be done often.

I have wondered about that same thing. They didnt have brass tumblers either which I think are more trouble than they are worth anyhow.
I would think if it was a problem some sort of case length guage would have been built into the old tong type tools they used to load with. I know I can get a lot of reloads out of my 45 colt cases shooting loads that would mimic old factory loads without trimming a case
