I have been toying with getting a short action rifle for messing around with benchrest shooting etc...I don't shoot competition but enjoy getting together with friends shooting 100-300 yds.  I have a couple Sako rifles right now, and really cannot afford another one.  I also have a Tikka in 243 but am kind of looking for something along the 7m-08  or 308 calibers.  I prefere a rifle in the 7.5 pound and up range with a 24" barrel.  I have looked at Savages, Rugers and of course Tikka (although I am not sure I like the T-3 concept).  I am probably looking more at the Savage rifles but they do have a lot of models and they seem to pretty much look the same.  What model would you recommend for under $600.00?

Remington 700 CDL in 7mm/08 7 3/8 lbs 24" Barrel

Should be able to get one for $500-600 or less if your gun dealer or local hardware store will do you right. Wal-Mart might be your cheapest option for ordering(worth checking on)

It fits what your looking for to a "T", not every gun company makes the 7mm-08 with a 24 inch barrel. Unless they just started Savage and Ruger only make 16.5-22" barrels for both the 7/08 and .308...not sure about the Tikka but I believe the longest .308 barrel is less than 24"

Savage 110 FP

I recently acquired a Savage 110 FP in 25-06. It has an accutrigger and a 24" heavy barrel. This rifle is a tack driver. My first outing I was getting some .5" three shot groups. The rifle shoots better than I can shoot. The accutrigger is a sweet trigger. This isn't a short action but I think you should take a hard look at the Savages.

You want accuracy then get the Savage in the model of your choice.  Lawdog

I'm with Val & Lawdog, I purchased a Savage 110 FP in 308 and it has accutrigger and 24" heavy barrel, I installed a Choate Vaminit Stock on it and I have a target at 100 yards that I keep up in my reloading room, four leave clover (4shots) .500 group.  Went to 200 yards and five shots and it stay within .750 group,  Right out of the box.  For what you want its the perfect rifle.

By the way I'm reloading and using Lake City Brass once fired, Sierra 168 Gr Match Bullet and 41.4 grs. IMR 4064 and Winchester Primers.  This load is great in my Savage, Remington 700 and M1A match rifle.

Howa has a new 1500 with a laminated thumb hole stock in 308 that I really like, It weighs about 7 1/2 lbs I beleive. Its very accurate and should be great for your purpose, You can also get it in A laminate stock with the classic style if you prefer................vernonp
