Managed Recoil Slugs
« on: August 11, 2004, 08:12:21 AM »
Anyone have any experience with the managed recoil slugs? I'd like to let my teen-aged son use one of my existing 12 gauge slug barrels rather than buying a new one for a 20 gauge that would only get a couple seasons use. I don't want him to get turned off early on due to the recoil of a regular 12 gauge slug load and the managed recoil loads look attractive in this respect.

No experiance with them, but I can't see how less recoil means anything but less performance. I would be more concerned with him getting turned off early if he can't hit a deer, or worse yet, loses one. I started my kids hunting with full loads in all their weapons, although they did practice wingshooting with light loads. For slugs, you can always add some weight to the gun, put on a recoil pad, ect. And don't let him shoot any off a bench! Slugs do not kick bad if you roll with them.

As long as the ranges are kept short (say withing 25-50 yards) I see no reason why there would be a problem.  Normal slugs should give at least 100 yard preformance (a lot longer with a rifled bbl and the new age "super sabot" slugs.)  The managed recoil was if I remember correctly, intended for L.E. use on Bag guys inside the listed ranges above.  So like I said, keep the ranges reasonable and I dont see any problem.

Why would a 20ga rifled slug barrel oly see a few seasons use? With the performance of modern high techg sabot slugs The 20 ga is more than enough to kill deer efficiently. My dad has never used anything other that 20 ga foster style slugs and has never lost a deer. Hes also never taken a shot over 50 yards. I have a 12 ga hastings barrel on my 870 and it has worked great with 2 3/4 " slugs and shoots a 2or 3" group at 100 yyds. The recoil is not that bad as long as you handle the gun properly and know what's going to happen when you pull the trigger.. All that said I just bought a couple of boxes of managed recoil slugs to try myself out of curiousity. I'll let you know what I think. What range shots would he likely be taking?

MANAGED RECOIL SLUGS?

I doubt there's any such thing as Managed Recoil Slugs.   I'm aware of "Managed Recoil Target Loads" for clays, but not slugs.    Check out the Premier® Core-Lokt® Ultra Bonded Sabot Slug loads on the link below:

http://www.remington.com/ammo/shotshell/shotshell.htm
http://www.remington.com/ammo/shotshell/am_prsabotslug.htm

These are for fully rifled barrels only - 385gr sabot slugs and should work just fine...    BEST impression I think you can give a kid, is to kill an animal with a humane load that won't leave the deer needlessly suffering.    Have him do some target shooting with some light shot loads first - then graduate to some Express loads that will show him sorta' what to expect with a slug load.

GOOD LUCK!

Gowge - check out the Remington site, they do have a listing for Managed Recoil slugs and I have also seen them listed at Midway. Federal also has an offering I believe. If you can't find it, let me and I'll try and locate the link.

Markus, I'd like to hear your results. I have not seen any managed recoil slugs on the shelf around here yet and have not gotten enough items to warrant an order from my usual mail-order house.

The reason I am shying away from the 20 is not that it does not have enough energy (it has more than adequate foot-lbs). The reason is pure economics. I just don't have a barrel for the 20 and would need to purchase it (whereas I do have barrels w/ sights for the 12). I would rather use my tight budget on items that will see frequent and extended usage as I suspect that as my son gets older he will graduate to the 12 gauge and full power loads and the 20 barrel would spend time in the closet. Different folks react differently to recoil and I do not want to turn the lad off from hunting while he is just getting started into the sport. I am a big proponent of practice with what you will be hunting with and then practice a lot more before going to the woods. This is what enables me to humanely harvest wildlife along with judicious decisions on when to take/not take a shot.

I rechecked the Remington site, 'cos I'm also aware of the three (3) Managed Recoil Rifle Loads, but not 12ga slugs...  Please post the link to the Remington Page on Managed Recoil Slugs - I can't find it.

Here's their rifle stuff...

Gowge - I can understand your consternation, for some reason Remington does not have this on their website any longer (I just checked), no idea why not since it had been there since the first of the year. I did find a listing for them at Midway.

From Rem's web site:
It is listed under sluggers.
I have two boxes in front of me now. I bought then at Walmart this morning for $1.98 a box of 5. I want to see if they will have the same point of impact at 50 yards as the standard sluggers. MIKE.

Mike,

I got my shipment from Midway and went to the range the following day. POI was 4" higher than my usual full power loads using the managed recoil loads at 25 yards. Grouping was no different than full power loads. On the other hand the Winchester and Remington managed recoil loads both hit at the same POI in my Remington 870 which was nice.

Need to check them out at 50 yards but I did find them to be quite pleasant to shoot and they should be just right for my teen-aged son to use.

MV, Thanks for the range report. I still have not shot them in my gun yet. Hope to next week. 4" high is not too bad. Thanks, MIKE.
