the throat on my 223 ultra is extremely long so long that i can't even get close to it the rifling and i'm starting to believe that it is the reason for my inaccuracy. what can you do ,besides rechambering to a longer cartridge, to fix this ? i don't think you can have a nef's barrel set back like on a bolt gun? is there anything i can do or am i just stuck?

All new NEF .223's have long throats, but it doesn't seem to hurt its ability to be accurate, after a breakin period.

Don't give it a second thought, too many others have worried over the long throat of the .223, only to find it works fine as is. Like you, I tried to reach the rifling, and couldn't come close. It doesn't seem to bother accuracy in the least.

I'll be cutting the lump on the bottom of the extractor to change it to an extractor not an EJECTOR. The 40 grain V-Max just makes it to 2.300" I have a factory T/C barrel that has the same ridiculous throat as the H & R.
The Lee Collet die just resize's the neck of the brass, not every thing. A full length die can be used to just resize the neck of the case. This can help HOLD the case up in the chamber a little bit & get the bullet centered higher. If you don't have any dies a neck only MIGHT be the answer. If you can do a partial neck size you can get the neck centered a little higher too. This should get the bullet located closer to the same place each time you shoot it. I hope this makes sense to you'll! The LEE Factory crimp Die makes a crimp just like factory ammo. Its uses a collet to squeeze a very small section of the top part of the neck TIGHT to the bullet. Yes you can OVERDO this step. I think that with Moly and/or the tiny section of the bullet in the case that using the crimp die gives me more consistent ignition. I also could be full of bs. but I think it works the way I hopefully explained it. 3/8 > 1/2 " Good Luck

There is no valid reason to crimp a bullet in a single shot rifle.
If you need a bit more bullet tension just remove the expander button from the die. The exception may be a light load with cast bullets.
The crimps on factory ammo are there for automatic rifles, machine guns and heavy recoiling magazine repeating rifles for obvious reasons. to keep the bullets from being driven into the case by recoil inertia against the magazine well.
There has to be a lot more to it than cutting off the
lump
on the ejector to convert it to an extractor. The H&R rifle has no means to push the converted ejector, at present it is spring loaded activated by the pin trigger.
This does not mean it can't be done, most of the time the ejector works ok and my little notch takes out a stuck case with ease. Which get's us back to a single shot just be sure to make it count. Fred M.
