nealglen,
Your rifle is built on a commercial mauser action by FN.  All of the ones that I have seen have been of excellent quality at a really good price.  I missed buying one a few years ago whose price was less than the worth of the action alone. :(   If you got it for a good price I suspect you've got a gem.
Best,
TnNuc

Made by Fabrique Nationale
(FN) for Sears and Roebuck inc. and I do agree with TennesseeNuc about the quality of this Mauser Actioned Rifle(Very High Quality) my uncle has one, he got from Sears when it was new, and it  shoots better(stock) than most current centerfires made today...his is a 30'06 though...happy hunting/shooting with it, I believe it will serve you well if you choose to use it.

You have yourself one of the last great hunting rifles on an FN action!!!   My mom saved all year and bought one in 1950 for my father for Christmas.......around $55 or so.  I inheirited it, pillar bedded into a McMillan stock, and with Hornaday Light Magnum 150 gr interlock ammo it will easily keep 5 quick shots (no cooling) well under an inch at 100 yds.

Enjoy it, they are a pleasure to own and shoot, and will only increase in value.

OH, back on topic....FN actions, put together by High Standard for Sears under the Higgins name.   I'll paste a link below that will give you the details to decipher the codes on the rifle so you can tell when it was made, etc.  Here goes......

If that link doesn't work just type it in its still a good link

I am so sorry!  I am not sure where this association stuff came from. When I did this before I got right into it, now you need to join to get in. I do not in fact belong to it.     Darn it, well, there I go again. What came up previously was a page that gave every date of manufacture.  Maybe we post a question on one of the pistol boards and see if we have a High Standard Collectors Assn member here???

Again, my apologies,

RR

I got to looking around about the model 50, ifin its in any fair shape at all there starting out at $350.00. I sent a e-mail to High Standard asking which model mauser action and they said a model 400. Found one mauser site and they listed everything but that one (figgers). Got a chance last week to put a few rounds thru mine and it was doing ok, maybe after I sit down at the loading bench can come up with something it likes.

No problem Rogue Ram...I was just curious...Gun Runner I 'll just have to try and live with out the info!  :-D   I haven't received mine yet but it looked pretty good in the pictures I saw. I gave 275 for mine. We'll see I suppose...just ordered sone bases and rings for a scope so I will have everything ready when it gets here. I'm thinking of hanging a 3-9 premier Swift scope on it.....I'm hoping it will shoot and not just one that doesn't shoot anymore and someone just unloaded it on P.T. Barnums poster guy!!
