how accurate are these,and do they kick much?

I have a stainless classic and it came with a synthetic stock. The recoil pad is a bit stiff and it seems to kick about like any other 30-06 I've shot. It was accurate with the factory stock. I had a Boyd's JRC laminated stock put on it and I'm happier with it now but then I wanted the laminated stock from the beginning. For the money I spent A Ruger stainless with a laminated stock would have been less expensive but I got what I wanted. A more rigid stock would be better than what Winchester uses IMHO.

lol Show me a 30.06 that DONT kick!!!!! lol some more than others but an 06 is a pretty muley weapon...Unless it weighs 10 pounds or you reload with light loads Its not really a fun range weapon but its definatly a great hunter

Regarding your question:

1) Accuracy - most factory sporting rifles will shoot accurately (some variance depending on what you feel is accurate) with the right load and stable, secure mounts for the optics. Not all loads will shoot accurately so some trial and error is inevitably involved. I'd be rather surprised if a typical bolt gun can't develop 1 1/2 inches at 100 yards and most will do better.

The shooter also has a role to play and can not be overlooked as does his/her comfort with the trigger pull which I either have reduced to 3 1/2 lbs or get the Savage Accutrigger and do it myself.

2) Recoil. - Hmmm. A very subjective issue but dependent to a large extent on how well the rifle fits. To one person, a particular gun will kick like a mule while someone else thinks it is pussy cat. My Savage 110 30-06 is not something that I would want to shoot bucket loads of ammo through though I hardly notice the recoil on my pard's 7 mm mag. Only difference I can tell is the fit of the stock. Trigger pull also affects how much I anticipate the recoil. Heavy pull means I expect and generally get walloped, reasonable pull usually translates into me being able to concentrate on the sight picture and never thinking about the recoil until long after it is past.

If you get the chance, try out a friend's or a friendly shooter's 30-06 at the range. This will tell you more than anyone here can about whether you will enjoy shooting a 30-06 or find it more than a handful.

got to shoot it today. had 10 -15 mph wind not quite crossways,maybe 45 degree angle,5 shots less than 2 inch group. i think on a calm day 1 or 1 1/4 group. i was using remington express core lokt 150 grain

Look at a limb saver recoil pad. It could help quite a bit. I don't know what you hunt all the time so a lighter grain bullet can help. As far as accuracy these guns can vary greatly by type and weight of bullet. Experiment with some different manufactures ammunition at the range. If it doesn't help have a gun smith check it, then find someone who reloads to work up an accurate load. Or maybe better yet start to reload your self and solve these puzzles with firearms, very rewarding and less expensive for the avid shooter. Bukfever

I totally agree with Buck jose...Take a looksie at the sims butt pad..It will calm that mighty mule down conciderably..Like he also said We dont know what your primary game animal will be so its hard to recommend what combination you will need...My own personal experiance with coreloc is bad so you dont want me talkin bout that at this moment...(lol havin that fight in another thread) But If you dont feel like reloading is for you then there are many good loads out there that have great potential..Its all in accordin to what that .06 likes ta eat...They can be picky at times..Also while your breakin it in you may have problems with pinpoin accuracy untill its broken in well so just give it a little time for everything to get *scrubbed* and make sure you clean it VERY well for the first 50 or so shots..Leading is a problem with new barrels as the lans and grooves are fresh and tend to take a little more of the bullet...Good luck

mainly for hogs,white tail,and mule deer,and maybe coyotes. i was shooting around 2 inch group or better. trigger was 6lbs, dropped it to 3lbs 1st 3 shots 1 1/2 group, next 3 3/4 group,with 150 corloc. i will be reloading, need some load info on blc2,varget,imr 4198

Don't put lead in the stock unless you feel a need to carry a lot of extra weight when you're out in the mountains! :grin: I'd keep it as light as possible. Try some 150 grain Sierra Gameking bullets and IMR 4895 as I've had good luck with that combo in my mod 70 30-06. Good luck! Mike

.30-06 isn't that bad. I'll usually put 20-30 rounds through mine when I go to the range and don't have a problem with it. When hunting you won't even care. If worried about it though some more mid range rounds like .25-06, 6.5x55, .260 Rem, or 7mm-08 might be more your thing.

Once thing to definately watch out for with the .30-06 though: holding the gun too loose. Make sure it's tight against the shoulder. If it's not you might just have a scope smack you in the face . . . hard. I've messed up with this before (usually after shooting my 6.5x55 where I can be a bit more lax) and got a serious knot from it. I've seen some people end up pouring blood over it though. Careful with it.

You mean which .30-06? Well, the one I currently have is a Savage 110 in wood stock. I've also had a Remington 03-A3 sporterized (sold it) and I've shot a Remington 742 .30-06 (belongs to my father) and a Remington 700 BDL .30-06 ( belongs to a friend of mine). All of them have similar recoil, with the 742 being a little bit easier on the shoulder.

Didn't really comment on accuracy since I have no experience with Winchester rifles. I was just commenting on .30-06 recoil because of cam69conv's statement: "lol Show me a 30.06 that DONT kick!!!!!"

well MG MOrden you look (from your pic) like you are a pretty beefy feller there son.. Imma a pretty big guy too but im also a lil on tha OLDER side,,Ive had several .06's in ma span and I have 2 now...Rem 700 bdl and also one built off of a mauser action (k98) german...Lil bull on the barrel so its a lil heavy but im also not sceered ta shoot it at 500 yrds all day...But it dont kick hard because of the weight...Now his win on the other hand with the synthetic stock probably kicks like a pissed off mule as I have shot a few of these maself...Now with the liter 150 grainers its a nice bit easier on the old shoulder..acuracy on them is a lil picky though..I found about the only bullet it liked (factory loads) was the federal vital shocks 150 grain... 1/4 inch MOA at 100 yards off of bags...good luck to ya

Yeah. 5'10" and 220 lbs. Wish I could say I was in shape but that hasn't been the case recently (I put on a lot of this weight when I was in high school and played football. Went to college, quit working out, weight slouched

). I'm currently on a diet though (and with duck season coming in in another few months I'll be taking some very long walks in some heavy chest waders), so maybe the '06 will bite a bit more when I'm back under 200 :lol:.

You seem to get along with your '06 ok. The extremes are what puzzles me (you know, those guys who want to use .223 for deer because they think a .243 recoils too much :? . Those are the ones that scare me

BTW, as far as accuracy goes, I can only speak with any great experience for my Savage, but strangely enough the best 150gr groups I get are Sellier & Bellot. .75" at 100 yrds. I haven't tried any match grade rounds in it, but as far as hunting bullets go those are top notch for accuracy. I just don't use them very often because they don't sell them anywhere locally (and I prefer to handload my ammo when possible. Wish I could get just the .30 cal bullets from S&B).

I know they had them for .303's at like 10.50 a box but I think they were softpoints...dun remember...Ill try ta trackum down for ya MG
