Anybody want to see a new caliber?

Any new calibers in a bolt that you would like to see?  If so what caliber and what would you use it for?  This may help us all decide what our next gun, we have to have, might be.  Buckfever

Buck;

It's not a new caliber, but I would like to see the old 30-30 Win in a well made, accurate bolt gun. Something like a Ruger Mod. 77 MKII or a Model 7 Rem. I have a Ruger Mod. 77 MKII in 7.62X39 and I have more fun with that rifle than any other rifle I own. Plus the ammo is cheap as 22 rimfire ammo. You can get ammo (30-30) at Wally World for about 5 or 6 dollars a box. Cheap shooting.... that's what I like. I don't need all the bells and whistles out there.
Just my 2 cents.

Dennis.

Hmmmm, that would just make my list of firearms I must own that much longer, as if it is not long enough.

Well, my thought would be for a 6mm mag such that I would have plenty of pep even at long range for deer size animals and not get my molars jarred at the range, be nice if the ammo weren't too darned expensive. My 25-06 with 100-120 grains is great and there is a bit of a gap between it and the 270 so there might be a rational (slim maybe) reason for such a cartridge. I love the 7 mag and its flat trajectory but it is more than needed for most of the whitetail hunting I do. I just can't get warmed up to the short and super short mags so a more classical looking cartridge in belted mag would be attractive and I actually don't mind the long actions in bolt rifles.

There may be other cartridges that fill the bill of what I described but I think this would be something different and no doubt fuel the fire for many posts if it ever came out.  If there were not any new cartridges from time to time, how many times could you post something new and provocative about the 30-06?

I agree with ms.  I haven't been one to buy in to all the Short, Ultra Short, Kinda Short, Sorta Short, etc magnum hype, however a short action in the 338 caliber does appeal to me.  Even one built on the regular old 308 case would be o.k. in my book.

There's one cartridge that no one has made yet, and I'm surprised that it hasn't been talked about, and that's simply a .308 case necked down to a .277 caliber bullet.  Or, think of it as a 7mm-08 necked down to a .270.

I think that would make for a great cartridge for whitetail deer, especially for youngsters.  It would be more powerful than a .243 and .260, yet have less recoil than a .308., and even a 7mm-08 (although the difference would admittedly not be significant.)

I guess you could call it a .270-08. :)

Zachary, how about a 30 Rem necked down to 270?

That would be a 6.8 X 43 SPC.  Well..they shortened it a little too.  Same over-all length as a 223.
....make it count

Well it seems NO one is answering the question (CALIBER, NOT CARTRIDGE), I will play also.

I don't have much for the WSM's and I think the WSSM's are a complete waste of time. The one area that the WSM's interest me the most is the area they haven't gone. Mentioned above a 338, 358, 375 and 416 would be some calibers I would like to see on the parent WSM case.

There really aren't many holes for new calibers. I reckon maybe a .21 or a .23 but that's about it. We have .17s, .19s, .20s, .22s, .24s, .25s, .26s, .27s, .28s, .30s and on up the line. I reckon that did leave room for an .18 and a .29 didn't it? Nope I see no need for a new caliber and likely wouldn't buy one if it were thought up.

The rim base of the 6.8x43 SPC is .422 inches. Neck it down to .18, .21 and .23 and fill the gap.  I could have a 22 LR, 22Hornet, 220 Swift , 270 Win. 30-06 , and 375 H&H  to hunt about any thing in the world but jest having the oldies would be boreing. We could do away with all the shooting web sites if only the oldies existed.---- Have fun try something new.

I do not know what it would be. We have never been so overwhelmed with new cartridges.  I would like to see the 257 Roberts-7x57-6.5x55 loaded up to their full potential in modern rifles. There is nothing in thier class that would be better if they were loaded to the same pressures as the other rounds. The Remington 6mm is a great little round that is on its way out. I really hate to see new rounds come out that are inferior to some of our old stand bys that can not make it. Just my 2 cents of opionion.  vernonp

Dear Guys,

I'd be happy just to see the 6.8mm Remington SPC that we have all been hearing about for more than a year, but which seems never to really appear (except in Barrett ads for assault weapons and Midway ads for ammo they don't appear to have).  I think that this will be a fantastic improvement over the .243 Winchester, and will take care of the reliability problems that the .243 has on deer.  (The .243 never lacked foot pounds of energy, it just lacks sufficient bullet weight and cross section to be a totally reliable deer round.)

Just my opinion.  Big Paulie
