Tikka T-3 Stock & Zachary
« on: July 26, 2004, 11:03:59 AM »
Two Subjects...

I recall reading something about those who bought Tikka 3s and sprayed foam insulation into the synthetic stock to eliminate the "hollow" sound. That's my only complaint about the T3 synthetic...that hollow stock sound. I took the recoil pad off my T3 and there is definititely room for "foam insulation" to dampen the hollow sound without adding weight. Any reports of the insulation expanding to the point of breaking the stock?
Has anyone tried this?

On another subject.

Zachary...You and others seem to have a problem with the T3 not being a short action. When I put a .308 in my magazine, work the bolt, it only travels to the limit of the .308. The bolt does not travel all the way to the rear as if a .270 or 30-06 were in the magazine. Therefore, I submit that even though it is a long action magazine, it still is a short action if using a .308.

I took my new Tikka T3 out to Texas last year. Three shots....a fallow deer, a whitetail buck and whitetail doe. At the range it is MOA. What more can you ask of a rifle? Got mine from Walmart for $408 plus tax, and that joke they call state check...simply an added tax.

Comments are welcome.

Granted, although the T3's bolt only goes as far back as is the length of the cartridge, in your case the .308, then there is no need to have the extra weight and size of a long action receiver and bolt.

The T3 is an exellent rifle.  In fact, I bought 2 of them.  One in a 300WSM, and the other in a 6.5x55.  I haven't received these rifles yet, but I should pick them up hopefully sometime next week when I get back from my business trip to Brazil.  It's just that the long action receiver and bolt is just a waste.  I like true short action receivers and bolts with short action cartridges.  That's just my personal preference.  Others, such as yourself, don't seem to mind, and that's okay.  Look, the .300WSM and 6.5x55 are not long action, but then again aren't true short action either, but I still bought two T3s.  So it's not like the one-size-fits-all concept is a true deal breaker for me either. :)

HMMM... I too would like to hear more about the foam fill technique.

I picked the T3 over the CZ based in part on the action.  The CZ .223 came in a mini mauser short action that was real cute, but the T3 was much smoother and faster.

I didn't wait for a reply about filling the T-3 synthetic stock. I removed my Tikka T3 recoil pad (a very small Phillips head screwdriver) and found the stock very hollow. I went to Walmart and bought some foam insulation. I inserted the foam insulation into the stock (about 3/4 full) and waited about four hours for the foam insulation to dry. I then trimmed the foam insulation and reinstalled the recoil pad. It did eliminate some of the hollow sound, but not as much as I expected. No weight was added to the stock and all feels good.

I'm tempted to buy more Tikkas, but I think I'll go back to wood stock.
