Ok, since I can't shoot much until house is built, so I've decided to build a rifle range on property. I can get a 200 yd range without difficulty but I want to quiet down some of the noise generation especially from the belted boomers. Anyone got any ideas on how to build a shoot through "range muffler"? I am sure the neighbors wouldn't mind an occassional 06 going off but when the 300 WM or the 7RM cuts loose, the chickens will stop laying and milk will turn sour...

I will be pouring a concrete bench with covered pavillion so it is going to be pretty standard up to that part anyway. Will be nice to load up few rounds and just walk out back and let er rip. Anybody got any ideas?

Boots,
You might try building a frame in front of your bench that will hang a row of old tires to shoot through. An old kiddie swing set would work just fine, with a set of pulleys to raise and lower the board that the tires are hanging on. With the adjustable tire height you could either shoot from the bench or off-hand. You would be shooting through a rubber tunnel. That should quieten things down a bit. :-)

The tire idea will work Elmer Kieth used one made from tractor tires. You might also drop a linr to Rick Jamison the reloading editor at Shooting Times he has one made from 3 20 gal oil drums filled with machine shop cuttings. At one time drawings were availible.

How about bales of hay stacked to make two walls?

Randy : The problem with the bales of hay is they wont last as long as the tires, and they could pose a fire hazard, I set the grass on fire shooting a muzzel loader at a range once.

Just get you a small 8 x 10 shed and shoot from inside, it will be
loud inside but you will be out of the sun and dry too.
Shoot thou a smaller window with the muzzle well back from the
window.

At our local range we use a 6 to 8 foot piece of concrete storm sewer pipe that is about 24" in diameter. It is set on a dirt mound and has a short cement wall poured around the back side to hold it in place. Works great but not very portable.

The 15 edition of Handloaders Digest (1996) has directions on the building of a range sound reducer. Supposedly, it was very efficent.
