Scope for Mossberg 500?
« on: July 26, 2004, 03:08:28 AM »
Hey guys  :D I usualy hang out in the H&R/NEF forums, but I got a question about my Mossy 500 12 ga. I posted this over at SGW but got little response. Anyway, I have the standard 500 with satin walnut stocks and I've been looking at the drill-n-tap on the receiver and it looks to me like that the standard two-peice scope mount would work. The ones like you would put on a Rem 700 or other rifle. I have the 24" Slugster barrel for it and want to scope it for deer season. Any help?

The Weaver Convert-a-Mount setup works pretty well. You can get either a low mount or a see-under mount. Biggest advantage is that the mount base installs on the side of the gun using existing holes and remains there. The bracket, with the rings and scope can be removed at will, without tools, to permit the use of normal shotgun sights.
When the scope is re-installed, it returns pretty reliably to zero.

Most any gunshop, and probably even stores like Wallmart will have Weaver style bases to fit those holes.

I would suggest you get a scope with a long eye relief for your mossberg 500 slug gun just to keep you from getting scope eyed from the heavy recoil of a 12 guage slug.  I would suggest a Cabelas Pine Ridge Shotgun scope or a bushnell banner cantilever slug gun scope which is a 1.75-5 x 32mm scope with 6 inches of eye relief.
