Bisley grip frames
« on: July 25, 2004, 11:00:23 AM »
Bisley grip frames are readily available as a kit from Brownells.  The are oversize in all dimensions and require quite a lot of metal removal to fit in an aesthetically pleasing manor.

Bisley Grip Frames?
« Reply #2 on: July 25, 2004, 09:10:16 PM »
Chris,
I had a 7 1/2" SS SBH that was a good shooter, but the grip did not fit my hands well, and banged me up every time I shot it.  At the time, Ruger did not offer a SS 7 1/2" Bisley.  I got a "kit" from Brownells and converted it to a Bisley.  It consisted of a Bisley gripframe, trigger, hammer and a few various small parts.
The only fitting that mine required was external.  The width of the gripframe had to be taken down a little on both sides.  Also the two humps at the top of the gripframe had to be taken down to match the frame.
I used a thick piece of plate-glass and wet/dry paper for the sides.  That kept them flat.  The whole process took me about 5 hrs. one afternoon.  I used a green Scotchguard pad to match the factory finish and to blend the new parts together.
I sold my old gripframe trigger and hammer to a friend that wanted a std. SBH set-up.
Now I have a SBH that shoots well and fits me. :-D
It was an easy job...try it you'll like it.
Best,
TnNuc

brownells has them for @$200 but the best way to do it is like Macbullet said buy two guns and sell the parts gun. The one i did that way bolted right up with no fitting needed.

Buy a Bisley Vaquero and swap the parts
« Reply #5 on: July 28, 2004, 02:33:24 AM »
That is by far the cheapest and easiest option.  Buying the parts from Ruger would cost about $175 plus shipping, and if you are buying a blued gripframe it is shipped in the white, so it would still have to be blued.  Ruger will fit and blue the grip frame for $50 plus minimum $20 shipping.  You can buy a new Bisley Vaquero for $400,(less if you really shop around) swap out the parts and sell the resulting parts gun as a "lightweight Vaquero" or "Super Vaquero" depending on which grip they ended up with, for at least $300. Heck, put them up on gunbroker.com and call them "Custom" Rugers, someone will bite.

What it boils down to is this; if you are confident you can safely disassemble and reassemble a Blackhawk, and can afford to front the cost of a second gun, each conversion can be done for about $100.

I've been thinking about buying a Bisley Hunter and a SBHH in 45LC and making my own Bisley Hunter chambered for 45LC.  Has anyone ever bought two guns for this purpose and found that the Bisley frame was to small to fit tightly in the gun they were converting?  That's the main reason I haven't tried this yet.

:cb2: Wouldn't it be cheaper-and a whole lot easier-to just buy a Bisley to begin with? The last one I bought was only $389. (5.5" Bisley Vaquero .44 mag. w/ivory grips and case colored finish.)
