Winchester M70 Coyote in .25 WSSM

Just bought a new Model 70 Winchester in .25 WSSM and a Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15X50 to go with it. Now I have to wait for the "Commander in Chief" to go shopping - or something - so that I can sneak down to the basement and mount the scope.

It's a good thing I have a big gun cabinet, because as long as its full, I don't think she'll notice that I added another member to the collection. The only problem this time is that the Coyote has a stainless barrel. I put it the very end so it's not too conspicuous. Now I'll have buy a new set of dies and, of course, a new shell holder for my Rockchucker press. Life sure gets more complicated as you get older! :-)

I thank the good Lord everyday for having a wife that is as big a hunter/shooter and fisherperson as I am.  Makes life so much easier.  Lawdog

Paperpuncher, if you reload you can tell her that you're loading some shells up for a friend and that you needed his rifle for chamber measurements, magazine length, feeding etc, etc, etc.

That's what I have to do sometimes.

:D Just got a model 70 coyote in 270 wssm. I took it to indoor 50 yd range and averaging a little less than 1/2 inch 3 shot groups with winchester 130 gr factory loads. I did adjust the trigger myself and it's breaking pretty light now,do not have gauge. Also sanded out some rough spots in bed and removed some extra glue junk. Really a nice fit now.

Going to outdoor 100 yd range this coming weekend to try some different loads. Seems to kick less than my Browning A bolt in 270 Win. which of course is a lighter weight rifle. Have the 3200 elite in 5-15x40.

I've been hunting for over 40 yrs but for some unknown reason this is my first Winchester and I'm impressed. Want to load the 270 wssm in the 150 gr loads, this might be where the 270 wssm really pulls ahead of the 270 Win.

Lawdog - you are truly blessed.

All - Thanks for your "expert" advice. Fortunately, she would never be able to distinguish one set of dies from another (or cartridge case, for that matter). When I am down at the loading bench, and she is home, I am reminded of all the jobs that need doing around the house.

copp - Congratulations on getting the Coyote, only I think you mean the 270 WSM (Winchester Short Magnum). Mine is in the 25 WSSM (Winchester Super Short Magnum). I wish us both good shooting and tight groups with our M70 Coyotes. Let us know how you make out at 100 yds.

This is my second Model 70. I bought an almost new Pre-64 Featherweight .30-06 back in the late '60's. That gives you a little nudge when shot from the bench rest. It was my favorite deer rifle when I used hunt in Pennsy back in the'70's. I still have it.

I forgot to say that I too have a M70 Coyote in .223 WSSM.  I am having a blast with mine.  Accurate and deadly on varmints as far out as I care to try to take them.  Also don't pay any attention to the rumors about poor feeding, case splitting, barrel burning, etc., as they are just that, rumors.  How about reporting back every so often on how things are going with your .25 WSSM?  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

Lawdog,

Thanks for the encouraging news. Appears that your Coyote is a great shooter. Hope mine does as well. I have a Ruger M77 Heavy Barrel Varminter that I purchased back in '76 in .220 Swift. I've never loaded my Swift hotter than 3700/3800 fps and at those velocities it is a 1/2 MOA shooter. The barrel and throat are still in great shape.

I probably won't get to the range with my .25 WSSM until around Labor Day, but in the meantime, I am going to try to lighten the trigger pull a bit. It feels like about 4 lbs from the factory, but is nice and crisp.

I only have 2 boxes of Winchester Supreme 85 grain spitzers for now. Next step is to get a set of dies - probably go for neck size only on this one.

I'll keep you posted on how she performs. :-)
