Well guys I am going bear hunting this fall and will be packing my SBHH in 44. I have never shot any big game with a pistol and have a question ab out my bullet and shot selection. I will be shooting a 325gr WLNGC Beartooth Bullets over 21.1gr H110 from my 7.5 barrel. I can consistantly break clay pigeons out to 100yds from variuos field rests and break them offhand out to about 40yds. I will be hunting from the ground in and around feeding areas and my shots should be 50yds or under. I would like to know if this load can be used on tough angle shots and if it will hold up to a through the shoulder shot. I am an experienced rifle and bowhunter and know where to hit them with these weapons but have no experience with the pistol.

This sight is great for answering my rookie questions!

Look around on the used book market for "The Perfect Shot on North American Game" by Boddington (sp). This is a good book to reference for shot placement.

Erick,
I think you will be useing plenty of gun and the bullets you mentioned will do fine. Sounds like you are a good hunter, If you have scored with a bow
you will not have a problem. Be sure to let us know how you made out.

Erick - that load should take just about anything that walks on this continent, including Buicks, Pontiacs and old Ford Trucks.  I would hazard the statement that as long as you place your shots properly, and it certainly sounds as though you have the skill, you should have a successful hunt.  Send us pictures.  Mikey.

That load is also good for 12" creosoted logs. It will pass right through. A 45ACP traveling about 800fps will bounce off and not penetrate at all.

The best answer that can be given for your question is to recommend that you go to the "Bear Hunting" section of this forum and go to the 4th or 5th page and read the thread addressed "Question for JJHACK". This thread will answer your question better than anything else.

If I remember correctly JJHACK favors the 240 gr JHP for black bear.

Erick,

If memory serves correctly, this is damn close to the Garrett Hammerhead load that has taken most everything in this great land and most in Africa. Even Cape Buffalo!

I have had great experiences with heavy cast bullets, and even Beartooth.
I put a 360gr .454 Casull through both shoulders of a 1200 buffalo at 50 yds. It's not apples to apples, but close.

I, too, am looking forward to a bear hunt this fall.  After reading JJHack's post, I guess I don't feel bad about bringing either gun I had been thinking about.  I've got a S&W 657 Classic Hunter II, topped with an UltraDot, sighted in for 250 grain CPBC WFNGC over about 20.6 grains of Li'l Gun, and I also have a Desert Eagle, .41 mag, with a JPoint optic, sighted in for 210 grain Hornady XTP over 21.5g of W-296.  I havn't accurately chronied these loads, but they are not mild.  The jacketed bullet I would only use on a broadside shot, I believe the cast bullet would shoot through the bear from tail to nose, but as long as the heart/lungs get hit, I'll be all set.

I will be hunting in the Catskills (NY).  No dogs, no bait, no guide.  Just the hunter, and the hunted.  Who is who shall be determined later. :shock:
