Will it work?
« on: July 18, 2004, 03:13:34 PM »
Just wondering if a synthetic stock from H&R/NEF will fit on a Ultra Varmit Rifle?  I was thinking about ordering one tomorrow if the price is not outrageous. I'm wanting the Monte Carlo stock, need to cut a little weight on the rifle using the 44mag. barrel for deer season this year.
Are the Ultra barrels thicker than the Handi barrels?
Just thought I would ask you fellas first before calling the factory.

Thanks.  :D

Yes they will bolt right on, If you are interested we could perhaps work out a trade. I have a new Sportster on order and as soon as it gets here I would be interested in trading for your stocks if you feel so inclined, let me know. I have 2 Ultra barrels but do not have the same calibers in regular barrels so am unsure if they are thicker. I would think not. The Ultra barrels I have (.35 Whelen and .280) seem to be a mid weight sporter configuration, not quite as thick as my bull barrelled .223....<><....

Which Varmint barrel do you have? If it is the 243 or the 223 then yes, they are thicker than the normal handi barrels in the same calibers. Shouldn't be a problem interchanging between the two different kinds of stocks though as long as you are using one of the barrel float tricks listed here. You may have to relieve some of the plastic from the foreend of the syn set with some 80 grid sandpaper but I'd try it first before I did that.

I take it you have the 44 mag scoped or else you wouldn't be wanting a monte carlo stock. I suggest, and I know MSPR will agree, that you go ahead and and try the standard stock synthetic even if you do have it scoped. I thought I was just going to HAVE to have a monte stock for my Huntsman after I scoped it, but after shooting it I have found that was false. In fact I hardly could tell the difference. However if you are intending to use the iron sights on the 44 then the monte carlo stock will be a pain in the neck......literally, you won't be able to find the iron sights while using the monte stock.

I had to use a die grinder to remove enough synthetic material out of the forearm for my .357.  A lot depends on how true the forearm lug is welded on the barrel.

I'm using standard stocks on my .357 and my Hornet and both have scopes.

Sorry fellas;  :(

Tried to get on the web site last night to see any replies, but kept getting a web site not responding. Could not log on.
Went ahead and ordered the stocks this morning... $52.00 total. the guy said at H&R it would not be a problem as far as fitting. By the way it is a Ultra 223 heavy barrel.
When the stocks come in, if it fits then yes I would be interested in selling the cinnimon laminate stocks, and yes I do float the barrel with an o-ring.
Someone make me an offer.... on the stocks.
