Gentlemen

I received my first Nagant last night, a 1912 verson double action. Does anyone know where I can find a manual for this firearm? I'm especially interested in something I can download and print.

I had two of these but sold them. Had a '43 and a '44 Tula. Both were very nice but as I'm not a hand loader and ammo is exspensive (Fiocchi $35 dollars for a box of 50) I decided to get rid of them. Very heavy double action pull.

I'll probably will break down and buy at least another just for the heck of it.

Thanks, Joe. That's exactly what I needed. Since I am a reloader, now I have to find boxer brass (hopefully for less than the Fiocchi! Either that or find some Berdan primers and make a water de-primer.

Wayne: years ago there was a write-up on Nagant ammo belabouring the same problems you have mentioned. I think someone said youcould make cases from 32-20 brass or possibly 38 spl brass but I am not sure.

Recently, the Shotgun News had an article by the Gun Guy on the nagant revolvers - I do not recall all the details but that might contain some useful information for you.

It didn't take long. Buffalo Arms lists Bertram unformed brass for the 7.62 Russian Nagant for $15/20. Still steep, but doable. They also list dies by 4D @ $69.10. That may slow me down a step or two.

Thanks for the info, but if I remember correctly even the 32/20 brass was short and would not make a complete seal.

Wayne - I'm not certain if 32-20 brass can be made from 38 spl or 357 brass but if it can it may be long enough to form that seal at the end of the cylinder. But, if I remember the Nagant correctly, the cylinder moves forward to seal the chamber against the barrel and the end of the cartridge case is then insdie that sealed area. I don't recall the case itself causing the seal, which may allow for the use of 32-20 cases or 'homemades' slightly shorter than original.

Does anyone have COTW? My Russian ammo measures 1.519", or 38.58mm. Can anyone tell me the length of 32-20 brass? Of course, I'm not sure it will be substantially cheaper, and I'll still have to get the dies. I'd just like to know.

I ordered some of that ammo from SOG several weeks back.
It is some pretty decent stuff. It comes in a Yellow Box designated
as Target. I pulled one of the Bullets (I won't say how) and it is
a neat little full wadcutter with a hollow base of slightly over 100 grains.
I have never seen powder like was in it, It looked like green sand!
They don't have as much "SNORT" as the Fiocchi stuff but they are a whole lot cheaper to shoot.

The only Boxer primed Cartridges I have seen are Fiocchi.
But two boxes of them cost as much as another gun!!!

I don't have dies yet, so I'll hold off on ordering, but this sounds like the best available. Probably listed on Buffaloarms.com

My buddy has the dies for converting the .32-20 to Nagant. They are a bit short, so some velocity is lost due to the incomplete gas seal.
Our current load is 2.8 grains of Red Dot under a hand-cast 95 grain lead bullet. The Chrony clocks them at around 740 FPS on the average. He's going to try an even 3.0 grains, and see if we can get some more speed out of it safely.
Accuracy is actually a bit better with the lighter 2.6 grain load (650 FPS), but it's still fairly decent.
Once I can get the dies myself, I'll be trying other powders. I'm thinking Lil' Gun should be just the right stuff. Works wonders in my .38Spcl.
