lots of fishing for me and no shooting for some time now.soon the bow&arrow will be taken out again,i have a hunt in N.Dakata in Sept.im going to shoot a few varmints there too with my 223 if i see some.they say there is lots of yotes and prarrie dogs there.im after a mule deer and a antalope with my bow.mid day hunts with the handi rifle for the varmints.not to far off for this hunt :grin:

im not shooting yet either. im about ready to put up the fishing poles ad start shooting the bow too. ive been shooting some clays with my brother, but want to get to the range to shoot the .270 and my new, unfired, ultra slug .20!!!

Jeff - I been wanting to get out to the "range" and try my new 25-06 loads but it is really HOT here and there's no wind at all where we shoot. That's good for shooting when the temps are down but hard on an old fat man when they're not. My best hunting bud has been seeing deer every morning and most afternoons lately as he travels right thru our hunting area evry day. He lives right there too. Says the bucks are starting to get velvet and all the deer are active and not jumpy yet either. Has been able to stop and take video even. Time to sight in the crossbow and start setting tree stands soon.

i am still waiting for my .223 bull barrel and .50 cal muzzleloader barrel. in the meantime, i've been pulling back the bow, getting ready for urban deer season in VA. Starts mid Sept and goes until mid March.

This weekend taking my Tikka .308 and Ruger 10/.22 out to try them after having lapped the barrels and bedding the .22 barrel. With crap ammo the .308 shoots 2 inches at 100 yds and the .22 one inch at 50 yds (before lapping/bedding). All of the accuracy problems are with the shooter :oops:

i am hoping to hollow out some groundhogs in August with the .223 barrel.

Most good fishing is done here in June.

The only shooting I've been doing has been with the .357 maximum, the .357 mag, the .41 mag redhawk, the 41 mag 1894fg marlin, the 30-30 NEF, the .22single action pistol, the CZ452, and that's about it. So jeff, I' guess I've slowed down a little as well . :shock:

My shoulder is about to be probed and prodded, don't know if the bow will get pulled this year.

I'll be working on the postal match here pretty soon.

I just got back from a family reunion and did some prairie dog shooting Saturday. That was a blast. I spent more time doing that than visiting with relatives. I'm gona start working with my .270 for the Utah dear hunt in October. I'm shooting!

I have been doing some new load development and then do some paper punching in my back yard (60yds) for my .223 NEF. I have found that my NEF also likes Nosler 55gr BT's and BenchMark powder.

I have also been looking around and talking to some of the local farmers and have obtained permission for 2 more farms to hunt on this coming fall/winter. I saw another place that I will stop at tomorrow....they raise small goats. They live right across the road from one of the farms I now have permission to hunt on. This landowner told me that 2 weeks ago he walked down his driveway to pick up the sunday paper and 2 coyotes were sitting at the end of his driveway !! He said that they weren't in too much of a hurry to leave !! I got a hunch that this season is going to be just great...

Been working on loads for my son's 45-70, and .243 Handi. Also working on 250gr Nosler loads for my .338. With the .338 I'm hitting a 1 liter bottle consistantly from 50 to 350 yards. That puts me in the heart lung area of everything from Wolves and Sheep, to Moose and Grizzlies. I've got a 14 day float trip planned in the Brooks range of Alaska 5 September. Should be a good trip.

Just bought the last 3 cardboard deer archery targets that Wal-Mart had on the shelf.

Now I can focus on what I will be hunting come hunting season... no not the cardboard either. But I like to use animal targets not bullseye targets for hunting practice :eek:

Well, I'm off work tomorrow and can get out and do some shooting with my 45-70's.

i like the realistic targets better too. i can focus on a dime sized area i want the arrow to go into, rather than the rings. Paper targets and 3 or 4 bales of hay is WAY cheaper than a 3d target... Anyway, i'll quit cuz this is off topic.

Yep, I shot a possum that got into it with my 100lb yellow lab this morning at 4:00am. Very tuff old possum, as long as my forearm and had 1" canine teeth. Iowa corn fed possum.... It took 3 Remington high velocity 22 shorts at point blank to the head before the possum was dead.

And yes, my lab is current on his rabbies shots but I'm calling the vet to be sure there is nothing more I need to do. He has a heck of a time with possums. He bites down on the back of an animals neck to crush their veritibrea until they're dead. Well, possums play dead long before they are dead so he releases them, thinking they're dead. Then the possum would wake up and come at the lab again. My poor lab, kills coyotes, raccoons, etc, but can't kill a possum.... :?

Oh, last week I shot a large rat in my live cage trap I have located, unbaited, on the end of a 5ft long 5" wide, 5" tall square steel channel running between a tractor and a garage. He must have been in the trap a while because he almost had the sheet metal top peeled back enough for him to escape. A load of winchester #12 birdshot 22lr (same as cci but no plastic, just bent brass case) is perfect for this trap. Headshots are quick and it doesn't damage the cage.

I really hate rats and possums... :x

But I'm going to leave the 22 to the rats. I'm moving back up to the .410 for the possums. :wink:

Although I'm working on it I still don't have my reloading stuff set up.

Also I have turned in my dues for the gun club near me but haven't gotten my membership or gate code yet......so I'm poppin cans and paper targets in the back yard with a 22 using CB caps! :oops: Kinda pathetic! :roll: I am going to go to a cousins place and do some serious shooting this weekend though...prolly rain though! :cry:

I've been shooting about four times a week. Mostly playing with loads for the 45/70, and the 7mm-08. I just got my .17 Sportster the other day, so I'm trying to get that down pat. I was able to score two groudhogs with it so far. I switched off today, and had my Win. Mod. 94 out to try some Sierra 170 gr. bullets over 36.0 gr. of BL-C(2). They look like they'll be my main 30/30 load.

I did this with the Hornet today.

I wonder why I put the wrong date on that target? Must be Old Timer's Disease!

In case you can't read my notes (I can read writing, but I can't write reading!) the load was 13.5 gr Lil'Gun, 40 gr V-Max, CCI 400, Rem brass, 1.93" OAL, neck sized with a Lee collet die. Average velocity at 15', 2763 fps using a 20" SL or SY barrel.

I shoot a recurve so i have to re-learn to shoot each year :oops:

next trip to the range will be with the sportster .22lr....got to get ready for tree rat season :lol:

The group was twice as big using the same components in Win brass (1.62"). It may just be my barrel, but it seems to prefer Rem brass.

Paul I agree with the rem. brass mine does the same thing I am still playing with some loads but the brass seems to make a big differents with win. brass in the same load looks like I used a shot gun. This loading is new to me at least I haven't blown any thing up I didn't mean to.

I'm going out tommorrow to try out my 257 Weatherby,be using the factory 100 grain Hornady load,then I get busy with working up some loads with some heavier 120 grain Nosler partions and some 117 grain Hornady interloacks ..it will be be the first time I got to do any shooting for a long time...the neighbor hasn't ponied up the rest of the cash for my Survivor as yet(bummer) but hopefully he will this week so I can get my 308 ultra ordered...I got tons of reloading stuff for it and I'm chomping at the bit to get it all worked out....I was on vacation last week down in Texas...and went thru some good looking deer country in the northern section and in Oklahoma...saw a bunch of deer and coyote...boy did that get the old heart a going...and it gave me plenty to dream about on the long drive back home...there are some huge deer down that way..and I would love to get a crack at them sometime.....

I've been having a joyous time with a new CZ 527 in 7.62x39. It's the best natural cast bullet shooter I have ever had my hands on and I'd love to have a matching Handi barrel. As next best, I am keeping my eye open for a deal on a Handi .30-30.

You .30 cal cast bullet shooters are missing a bet if you have not tried Lee's C312-155-2R. It's worked in the stuff that I have around to try it in and I'm betting that it will do wonderfuly in a Handi. Because it is a nominal .312, the bore rider portion should be big enough for the Handi's large diameter and shallow rifling.

I shot my 45-70 "Ultra" this weekend.

Tried some of Leftoverdj's cast 405's (Thanks DJ). They shot pretty darn good. Better than the National Bullet Co cast bullets that I have been testing.

Powder was H4198, at 30, 31, 32, and 32.5 grains. Velocity was from 1200 up to 1375 fps. All charges shot well, but two were exceptional. The lowest charge put all three touching at fifty yards, and the highest charge put them all in less than an inch at fifty.

Other than that, mostly been shooting my bow. I probably need to get the smoke pole out too. It's getting closer......

Have you tried a 7.62X39 adapter in a .30-06 chamber? I have one, but the only thing I have to put it in is an 03-A3.

I had thought about geting a .30-06 barrel until this latest price increase. Now I'll just let the barrels rot on the shelf before I buy another one from NEF.

I was curious, after recently reading about how greatly the case capacity varies from one manufacturer to the other. While the external size of the case is standard, the internal is not. It might be possible that the Winchester brass might still work, but with a different load. Seeing that it has a lower capacity, would probably mean it is a thicker walled/stronger case.

I've always wondered if those things work...I don't have a 30-06 either...they make them in all kinds of calibers......I'm just worried about screwing up the chamber when ya have to take it out....

I have a 7.62 x 39 adapter for my .308. It is essentially a .308 cartridge that has the base cut off ( i am sure y'all know this, but i'll elaborate anyway). The whole unit (cartridge and .308 brass) is nearly the same size as a .308 cartridge. The cut case is loc tighted into the chamber. When you get these conversions, you also need to buy a stuck (broken) case remover, which attaches to a cleaning rod (At least the Hoppe's rods). This will remove the case when you want to get back to original caliber. I had fair accuracy with the conversion kit in with Wolf 762 x 39 Ammo (1.5 MOA).

That being said, i am still a bit nervous about ruining the throat of the chamber so i have not put it in since.

Consequently, i might be tempted to sell the conversion kit and ~200 rounds of 762x39. I think i'll hold onto the broken case remover...
