Scopemounts for Leupold Vari-X III on Sako Hunter
« on: July 11, 2004, 04:36:42 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I just purchased a Sako Hunter in 30-06, and look forward to some range visits. Along with it, I got the Leupold Vari-X III in 3.5-10x40.

Questions on the scope: The new models have finger-click adjustment vs. adjustment via a slot with a quarter or screwdriver. Any experiences with advantages/disadvantages of the newer Leupolds vs. the older model Vari-X III?

Also: What scope mounts would you recommend and in what height? Should I get the Opti-locks from Sako or would other mounts be better? Does anyone have experience with the Sako Opti-lock mounts?

Thanks and Happy Shooting,
Peter

I have not used the opti-lock system, however I did have success with Warne rings on a Sako 300 Ultra mag.  They were about $35.00, and well built.  I just had a custom rifle built & I am using Warne's on it.

The Optilocks are nice mounts. I have used them on both of my Sakos. If they have a drawback, it's that they tend to be rather high. Also, the ring screws are softer than most. Other than that, though, they work fine. I've got them on my .300 Weatherby Sako and they've been rock solid. I really like those polymer inserts. With these there's no threat of marring your scope.

On my 7mm mag Sako I've switched to Conetrols because they allow for a lower scope mount. There's now only about 1/16" clearance between my scope bell and barrel, which I think is ideal, instead of about 3/8". The Conetrols seem to be every bit as stout as the Optilocks (maybe more so). The only drawback to the Conetrols is that they can be a real pain to get your scope mounted in them. But once mounted, it's a very solid setup and they are about the nicest looking mounts I've ever used.

Another ring you might consider is Talley. I've got them on my Winchester Model 70 and they are very nice. Leupold also makes rings for the Sako but I'm not too crazy about them. I've got Warnes on a muzzleloader and these might be an option although I'm not very crazy about the way they're finished.

In regard to the Leupold scope, I've had both the older Vari X-III (several of them) and the newer VX-III (3.5-10x40). The finger adjustable knobs are a nice improvement, although other scope brands have had this feature for quite a while now. I certainly prefer it to the coin slot. Optically I really couldn't tell a difference in them. Personally, I prefer the Zeiss Conquest to both the old and new Leupolds, but they are dependable, so you shouldn't have any problems with it.

Thanks guys, for the feedback. I went back to the store today and decided to get the Sako Optilocks in "low". I think I'll be alright with those. I like the large contact area on the bases and the pin on the rear mount, which makes for a pretty solid assembly.

Leupold claims that the new VX-III's "eclipse" the existing VARI-X III's, due to various features including a new "index matched" lens system for better light transmission. I was curious whether anyone can confirm that. Anyway, they're about the same as the VARI-X III's so I decided to give it a try. I don't think you can go wrong with Leupold.

Regards

You're right, you really can't go wrong with Leupold. The VX-III I owned (I've since sold it) was a very nice scope, but I couldn't detect even a minor difference in optical quality over its predecessor. I tested it off and on for about a month and I found that my Zeiss Conquests were noticably better from a pure optical standpoint and the Zeiss Z-Plex reticle (which is etched in glass) is a better option than the Leupold standard duplex in my opinion. But don't let that bother you. You've made a good choice. The VX-III is plenty good and you'll get years and years of service out of it.

Daniel,

Agreed, Zeiss optics are great, but pricey. The Leupolds I think offer excellent quality for the money - and their customer service is second to none. I'm sure they'll perform well.

Thanks for the feedback.
