Starting to gather up what all I need for putting together a naval carriage for that 1/3rd scale 6 pounder from Gray-Star. The barrel itself probably won't be here for another couple weeks. The more I think about it, I would like to put steel tires on the wood wheels. Problem is that the local machine shops either don't want to mess with such a small order or have a cost prohibitive "minimum charge". What I need are 4 pieces of seamless tubing or seamless pipe cut 2" long.... 2 at 3" diameter and 2 at 4" diameter. Or would I be better off doing all 4 at 4" diameter? The measurements don't have to be exact as I would be turning the wood wheels on a lathe to fit. Sounds like a good way to make reinforced wheels. Larger is better - rolls easier.

Sounds logical to me..... guess I will go with all 4" tires. Maybe I should go 2 1/4" wide? Hopefully somebody will be able to supply.

Problem solved. A local steel yard turned out to be sympathetic. They had some 4" O.D. seamless pipe and cut me four 2 1/4" pieces. When they found out what I wanted them for they even cut them on a bandsaw so that I would have nice smooth straight edges. $7.50 for the pipe and $10.00 for the bandsaw.
