Why I like pumps and autos

Their cool. Also everybody else is slobbering over bolt actions and leverguns or thier "one shot one kill" single shooter. Just because I prefer a fast action does not mean I spray and pray every critter in the woods. Although, wh it's time to play (safely) with your rifle isn't it so much fun to be fast!? If I can't enjoy playing with my firearms, handguns and shotguns included,I don't want to hunt with them! The exception to the rule is the old military war horse bolt actions which have earned my respect and are fun to shoot partly because it's so %*@% cheap to buy and shoot one....or four...or...

I agree with your assessment. I have a Taurus 72C in .22 WMR, a 7400 in 06 and a Ruger Mini-30. The Taurus is my backpacking rifle, the 7400 is for hunting in the heavily foliated northern MN forests, and the Mini-30 is pure fun. All are pleasurable to shoot. I chose a close in semi auto hunting rifle because there is no secondary action manipulation noise for the follow up shot. The Taurus is almost a fun gun, except for its caliber (.22 WMR is not inexpensive). I did want the extra .22WMR power just in case, so it was a trade off I knew I'd be making. However, my son's Model 62C is pure fun as it is very inexpensive to shoot in its .22 LR chambering. The Mini-30 is accurate enough for 200 yards offhand shooting and provides some moments of fun spraying in the shooting pits. In northern MN the semi-autos and pump rifles are very popular for big game.

I have nothing against levers, bolts, or single shots because I own them and like them all. But, over the past few deer seasons, my Remington pumps are the guns I am grabbing for more and more. Last season, my 35 Rem carbine was all I used. You can't beat how easy they are to use. For me, shooting at a deer with my pump feels more natural than trying to grab a bolt handle or a lever. My carbine is mounted with a Vari-X II 1-4*20 scope and it is just plain out awesome. The pumps and autos are plenty accurate also. I am sure that reading books about the Benoits has helped changed my way of thinking, but who can argue at their success.
