chamber inserts
« on: July 09, 2004, 07:37:59 AM »
I shoot skeet just for fun and would like to try the small gauges with out spending a lot of money for a fitted tube set. I read a article in the latest issue of Skeet Shooting Review about Chamber Mates chamber              inserts, they rate them as very good. I under stand Briley also makes chamber inserts and a drop in tube set (no fitting). Can anyone give me any info about how well these things work and are they worth the cost.

I have never used them and do not know of the company that you wrote about (chamber mates ) But I do know Briley has a good reputation and I would think a better system with the tube set up which is basically a barrel inside a barrel. If this chamber mates is just a chamber insert I would think the Briley system in principle would be better but I cannot tell you for sure as I have used neither. Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I think the briley chamber inserts can be returned to the factory to have full length tubes instaled for a minimal price. I have seriously considered doing this in my  custom fitted Browning Ultra sporter 12 ga, but don't have $, need to sell 28 ga citori 1st.
So you could buy the inserts and if you don't like them you could sell them to me, or you could get tubes installed and shoot everything with the same gun.

From what I seen with guys at my gun club, they work pretty well.  One friend has cleaned the skeet course a number of times using 20 ga ChamberMates in his 12 gauge.  I have the Briley fitted tubes, and I think shooting the other gauges is a hoot.  The 28 and .410 have no recoil, so it's easy to tell why you missed. (At least as far as your lead being wrong; you still have to figure out WHY your lead was wrong.)  I say go for it.  You sometimes see the Seminole tubes on eBay, and occasionally the Browning inserts.  Looks for inserts that have an extractor that works with the gun's extractor, otherwise getting the expended shells out is a pain.

I'm gonna throw another question out here to go along with Ron's. It looks to me like these things might make it possible to shoot modern ammo in old damascus barrelled doubles. Anyone tried it?

Ron    I use chambermates, purchased from cabellas. You get 2 tubes for 49 bucks with shipping. I havent tried them on skeet but have used one in my bt99 for 16 yd trap. Have shot 2, straights out of 4 rounds and i cant do that with my 12 guage 1 oz loads. The only drawback is they would be slow for doubles in skeet cause the whole tube has to be ejected and the 20 guage empty pushed out with your finger. they work very well for trap. A friend wanted to try one, he
shot 3 shots from the 27 yard and smashed all three with a bt99 with improved modified in it. Hope this helps.

Ron, I used chamber mates in a winchester 37 in 16 ga. I used 28ga and 410 bore. The 28 ga patterned well but not the 410. If you decide to try them I would recommend you don't go down more than 2 gages. If you want to shoot all gages in one gun I believe the tubes are better. Hope this helps,Byron
