Springfield 1903
« on: July 09, 2004, 05:28:43 AM »
I have been given a US Springfield 1903 that has been "sportsterized".
The barrel was shortened, the stock changed, and a scope was added.
Not sure of any other mods.
Is this a rifle good for hunting?
How about ammo?

Any comments or info is appreciated  8)

I deer hunt with one... i shoot winchester failsafes in 150gr and they do quite well... I think they're neat guns to have and I use mine despite having a model 70 in 30.06 and custom 270 with a mauser action and a remmington in 300 win mag...  the one complain i do have is that you're limited in scope choices because of the angle of the bolt... otherwise i love mine.

dougOmatic,

Great rifle.  They make a great hunting rifle and I have found that most prefer bullets in the 150 - 165 gr. class to work best but they will shoot bullets up to 200 gr. quite well too.  Wish I had the one I sporterized back.  It would be a nice companion to my sporterized 1917 Enfield.  Lawdog

Thanks for the replies. I will take it with me next time I hunt. I thought it would be good since someone took the time to mod it.
I haven't shot it yet but, looking forward to when I do.
I'll take it to the range first to get used to it.
I took the scope off since it is more valuable than the rifle (a telescope M82, sniper scope).
I am wondering which is a good scope for it.

1903 Springfield,   Yes it is a good rifle, if it had not been for WW1 we would have probably had to pay a lot of money to Mauser Corp for stealing their design but so much for history.   The 1903 is basically a modified 98 Mauser action.    There are several things I as a custom rifle builder like better about the Mauser and some features I do not.   I like the Mauser one piece firing pin better but the lines of the Springfield give it distintion and you can open it up for bigger cartridges easier.   The bottom metal is also better styled then the Mauser.    I would have to give the Mauser a slightly higher reliability rating but not by much and the Mauser is stronger.    This is not relevant as any even semi sane load either action will take with ease.    If I remember right the 1903 will let go at around 95,000C.U.P.  and the Mauser at about 98,000 C.U.P.
I have a 1903 that I built chambered for the .308 Norma Magnum and it is going to Africa this month as my back up rifle.    The only reason it is not my main rifle is that I am trying to get a cartridge I developed, the .366 DGW ligitimised and so the rifle chambered for that round is what I will be doing most of my hunting with.
Enjoy your 1903 and if needed for scope clearance it is not very expensive to have your bolt handle altered, you have a great rifle and one of the classics!
