ammo for 629
« on: July 07, 2004, 06:39:29 PM »
Hi, I'm new to the forum. I'm 14 and live in central Oregon. I will be finally able to get my first big game revolver(for mule deer, yotes, and just fun blast'in). It will be a S&W 629 Classic .44 w/8 3/8'' barrel. I'll order it after I sell some other guns that I don't like or use(Win SX2- just got 1947 model 12 and Marlin 336- just got 1895 cowboy). I would like some advice on some good factory loads(I don't reload-yet) for big mule deer and blow'in huge holes through coyotes. Also any loads with a lot of muzzle flash?- I love it! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I like the Winchester Partition Gold HP's 180grain in .357. They work well in my uncles S&W Model 28 4". Should get pass through with a nice silver dollar exit hole on broad side shots(w/o shoulder). Saw pic's of a West Texas Mulie killed with this combo and it worked great. The .44's should be great too. No experience with the cast lead stuff but heard it does good too.

Hornady XTP is great ammo for hunting.  Both the 240 and 300 grainers. I also like the Nosler partition ammo.  Fedral cast Core if you like cast.

Has anyone tried hunting with PMC .44 Mag TR-SP?  Coding stands for truncated soft point and their web site says it's a great hunting round.

I shot 75 rounds of it today at the range and it performed well in my 12" Encore.

For the game you named .240 grn. Remingtons will work fine. I personally don`t like the Hornady XTP`s on deer as they do not expand well on deer, but they are very accurate bullets and would be great on heaver skined game. If you were going to reload I would recomand Serria .240 grn. bullets. They are as accurate as any bullet I loaded in .44 mag. , and have excellant terminal preformance on deer size game.

:cb2: Hey Mike,

I tried the PMC in one of my .44s, and I was really impressed with the accuracy. A local store has it on sale for $12.49, and if I wasn't broke I'd buy a case. Good stuff!

Catblaster,

Try the Hornady XTP in 200 gr in your 44 for yotes and cats.
The 250 Gr Partition Gold would be an excelent choice for the deer size stuff.
If you have someone around you that can reload, check out Oregon Trail Bullet Company in Baker City, Or. for some great hardcast solids.
I am shooting their 240 gr SWC's  (Keith Bullet)  in my 4 inch S and W Mountain gun, and love 'em.
