Why doesn't someone make a bolt in.....
« on: July 06, 2004, 09:43:03 AM »
45-70 :(

I just picked up a converted Siamese Mauser and it is a HOOT to shoot and accurate with cast slugs.  With Peeps it will punch one big hole at 50 yards with about 2" groups at 100yds and with louse eyes shootin at a paper plate cause I ran outa targets on the 50 yd. range

I have been doing some looking and it appears none of the major manufactures offer a 45-70 in their lines of bolt guns...

Why not?  It has been a stable cartridge to eons, can be loaded light (I use 28.0 gr or 5744) and in my mauser can also be beefed up to a point where the abuse from pulling the trigger would make ya ponder if the mauling you would get if you didn't would be less painful. :P

Just curious what you folks thought. Sure seems like there would be a place for one (at least there was in my gunsafe).........

As a rimmed cartridge the 45-70 is not well suited for current mass-produced bolt action rifles.  There is no manufacturer willing to tool up to make Siamese Mauser or Enfield bolt actions.  Sales would not be commensurate with their investment.  Winchester makes a Custom Short Action in the 450 Marlin.  Watch for more, less expensive offerings in the 450 Marlin.

Jackfish,

I understand companies are not going to tool up to rebuild Siamese or other Mauser Actions.

I beleive if memory serves me correctly (that is hit or miss some days  ) that someone  (savage maybe) use to make a 30-30 (rimmed cartridge) bolt action rifle.  My curiosity was why nobody ever expaned that into a 45-70 bolt gun?  Even it you went to a tublar feed like the bolt guns have...

Its more curiosity then anything else.  Not sure why the rim should make it that much more difficult as they have been doin it for years with 22 rimfire and .410/20/12 ga shotguns and they are all "rimmed".

Like I said I was just curious "why" companies never wandered off in this direction....

Thanks for your thoughts though.... DonT :D

Someone makes a 45-70 Enfield. A 303 British that's rebarreled.
JM

The Gibbs rifle company. :-)

There is a company in Martinsburg, WV that makes a 45-70 bolt on the Enfield actions. They also make 308's and 303's. They are called the Gibbs Rifle Co. The 45-70 rifle is called the Summit. Nice looking guns. They have a web sight. Everyone should check them out. My understanding is they get like new actions (unless they are makeing them) can not remember. I would love to have the 45-70.

Once those surplus Enfield actions are gone, so is the Gibbs 45-70.  No manufacturer is going to tool up to make a new rimmed cartridge feeding bolt action as there is no return in it.  Savage could barely sell the 30-30 bolts, let alone trying to make them in 45-70.

Why not? Because levers are much more fun.
