I finally ordered the Hunter. Will be in tomorrow.
I am torn between a red dot and 2X scope. I am kind of leaning toward the 2X but the more I read about the red dot, the more I think it might be right.
Will the 2X scope draw any light? This may be the deciding factor. I want to be able to shoot in low light situations. Which would perform better when the light gets low at dusk?
It may come down to buying both, but I really want to avoid that.

I would think the bigger objective takes in more light, most red dots have a small tube, of course the quality of the optics count. I think the the scope with amber crosshairs would suit you the best at low light levels, dawn or dusk, the red dots are lite and that also takes away from you seeing what your aiming at in low light levels, there is also illuminated cross hairs, that seem ok, you can control the amount of light you need, very little in low light. I always thought red dots are good for fast fast sight acquisition, good for still stalking, great for moving object's, what ever you choose, many days at the range to get use to using a scope on a handgun, good to practice locking in, once you get the hang of it, you won't get halfmoons in your objective

just get the tc 2 power with a lighted rectical
then both prob are solved lol

Take a look at a Nikon 2X. I like them for hunting handguns. Pistol scopes as a rule are not very "bright" in low light situations. I've tried a couple of red dots but the ones I tried were no good in the bright sun (couldn't see the dot).

I have used both the Nikon 2x and the Tasco red dot. The Red Dot worked great on my Taurus m44 8+" 44 mag. It was actually producing better groups at 50Yds, than my 2x on a sbh 7.5". I rid myself of the Taurus for a rh 7.5". Great gun, have a 5.5" also, but the red dot will not fit the Ruger rings. Looking for a ill. 2x pistol scope 20mm.

I have a 2x Leupold on my hunter and have no problem in low light situations usually. The only time it gets dicey is with black pigs in the really dark undergrowth at dusk. Of all the 2x scopes I own the Leupold is the touchiest about eye relief much more so than the Nikons or T/Cs. If you have concerns about low light situations Burris makes the FireFly (have one on a Browning)and T/C make a lighted scope. Both are very tough (have a T/C mounted on a Contender in 45-70 with no problem)and work very well.

I have the 2X Leupold on my 44 mag Hunter. I agree with the others that with the exception of extreme low light conditions, it works great, and hold up well to the recoil.

Specifically what 2x or red dot are you considering ?

If your talking a high quality brand like a Leupold, light will not be an issue in either choice. However, the red dot may in itself offer an advantage by the fact that it is a light and under extreme low light may give you an edge.

thurs I went to the range to check out my 44 mags. I had a concern about my Ruger Redhawk 5.5", as it was a might testy off the bench (+200 rds). I have just traded my Taurus 8+" m44 off for a Ruger Redhawk 7.5". I also tried out my Ruger SBH 7.5/ 2x nikon. I was really convinced that I had to send these pistols off, to have them ported, trued, etc. The Rugers I have break clean on single shot. A smith in Perry,Ia told me that the porting would not be really noticed, and concentrate on your grip.. Another fellow member suggested useing padded gloves when on the bench. I am having a great time with my 44's and can't wait for the hunt. My point is out of the box the Rugers only needed one change, a bigger grip.

Jim,

I put a Hogue Lamo Camo grip on my 44 SBH and it made a world of difference in the way it handled the recoil. I have average size hands and the way the grip fit my hand really dispearsed the felt recoil to a point of not really feeling it much at all.
A buddy of mine shoots a 44 Mag Super RedHawk, and he put on the same grip, but because he has really big hands, he just sent Hogue an outline of his hand, and they made the grip to fit him.

Well, back to the original question. I too have a Hunter. It's in .45 Colt but I once had a .44 mag Hunter and traded it. That was when they weren't making them anymore and I got a rare two for one deal that I just couldn't pass on. I personally don't use a scope on mine because of the light factor. Here in Florida we hunt the woods and near dark you might as well go home if all you have is a scoped handgun at 5:00 pm. I've tried most of the major brands (never tried a Pentax) and none of them gather enough light to see when it counts. I just like the extra weight up front that the SBH Hunter has.

You might try what I did and use a Millett rear white outlined sight and the yellow or white front sight that is available from Ruger or Ebay. I can see them right up until dark.

Have you tried a Bausch and Lomb 2x with bigger objective?? Or a Burris 2x7.. They seem to do a bit better than straight tube scopes.. I try to setup in the evening where my shot will be against a light background, but no pistol scope will give you a shot after 30 minutes past sundown.. cbagman
