Lone Eagle question
« on: June 30, 2004, 03:55:21 PM »
I just picked up a 44 mag lone eagle, and got around to shooting it today.  This is the first big bore handgun I have gotten and plan on using it for deer season here in Ohio as a new challenge compared to muzzleloaders.  The question I have is, the web of my hand got a beating today due to the grip being in the middle of the handgun, and I was wandering what I could do to cut down the beating recieved while shooting at the bench.  By the way, it's an accurate handgun, I got one group at 25 yards that was about 1/2" using 240gr. winchester sp rounds.  Thanks for any advice in advance.

I use a pair of riding gloves or batting gloves when I shoot my .308 lone eagle. I have more trouble with the cocking lever biting into my finger, but I know what you mean about recoil. I don't think it is the location of the grip as much as the shape of the grip. I have an xp in 7br that was center grip, and a Wichita 7IHMSA.They both wacked my wrist enough to cause me to change them to rear grip styles. They did NOT hurt the web of my hand like the lone eagle does.  jh

jhalcott,

I was looking on the internet, and one article a man wrote about said to use Uncle Mike's slip-on grips on the lone eagle...what's your take on that, do you think that it would work on the recoil, or just gain a better purchase on the grips?  Another one I had was to put double thickness moleskin on the top rear edge of the grip where the web of the hand sits(I know it wouldn't be asthetically pleasing, but it might work to cut down on the pain.  What's you're take on these ideas???

Well it ain't pretty grimacing in pain just to shoot a gun! I'd try any thing no matter how it looked to make shooting more enjoyable. The biker gloves absorb a lot of recoil but CAN interfere with a good grip. When I was into "sillywets" a guy used a plastic wood like product to form grips on a couple of his guns. It seemed to work well enough that he beat me regularly.    jh
