It's time for western canada to separate...
« on: June 29, 2004, 06:55:34 PM »
Am I the only westerner who feels totally alienated again by this government???  apparently, voter sanity once again stops at the manitoba / ontario border. If quebec can hold a referendum on separation, why can't the 4 western provinces? We will NEVER be represented in the house, and quite frankly, everyone past the ontario/manitoba border doesn't give a crap about us anyways. I think It's time we took a hard look at this issue. If nothing else, may raise some eyebrows in ottawa.

I feel much the same, but take a look at Winnipeg's vote. East of the Manitoba/ Ontario border is not the only place Liberals live. It seems that the closer people live to one another, the more liberal they get.

see the paper today? they would have lost the vote of confidence and sent us back to the polls, but the conservatives and bloc chickened out at the last minute.

Maybe the U.S. could trade its left-wing, urban areas to the eastern provinces. Maybe ironing out the details such as raising taxes and trying to convince people in New Jersey they ought to learn French would keep the left wingers so busy they'd forget about the rest of us.

somerled, you may be on to something there..... but what about the west coast?? I guess there's always the san andreas faultline...... what a world power that would be; the midwestern u.s. and the western canadian provinces. I have to stop now, I'm getting too excited!

Sounds good. We'll take western Canada if you take the liberal N.E. states. California? Who wants them? Maybe we can start a war with Mexico and make them take it back.

There are some areas in the People's Republic of Kalifornia that are o.k. Some cousins are moving up to the extreme northeast part of the state along the Oregon border. Maybe we could look at it on a county by county basis.

Maybe Greenland would be a good left-leaning colony prospect.

funny you should mention greenland. it's considered to be part of denmark and the danes are trying to prove that a big chunk of the Canadian artic is part of the greenland shelf and there for their territory.the already laid claim to some frozen rock that's ours earlier this summer. if they invade they'll face the canadian rangers, eskimos on snowmobiles with No.4 MK 2's. the danes haven't got a snowballs chance in hell! :-D

I don't see western separation working at least not all 4 provinces Painting with an admittily wide brush Sk and Mb are too dependant on other people's money to even think of going it alone. Heck they don't want to get rid of the wheat board. And Bc and Ab are too different politically.

Alberta separation is possible purely because of the cash from oil and all round animosity for the feds. If BC politicians could ever keep out of jail long enough to get their act together they might be able to go.  But I don't see SK and MB ever being able to support themselves.

With $50+ dollar oil there will be another NEP, then just watch the fur fly.

I agree it would't work if each province went at it separately. but who am I kidding; there isn't a politician out there with enough hair between his/her legs to even bring up the subject

If the Party Quebeois can push for a separation from the rest of Canada, I would think that the provinces west of Ontario could coordinate the same sort of movement and make a go of it.  What the heck, the western provinces have food, water, oil, gas and timber and are thus economically independent.  Bangladesh, formerly East Pakistan, won its independence 30 years ago from what was then West Pakistan.  You just have to want it bad enough.

If you are really interested, look up the Western Canada Concept. It's easy to find under that name (I think it's actually under www.westcan.org but I'm not sure). Membership is $15 and you get a newsletter. You're right, we should have done it 25 years ago.
