Author Topic: Winchester 290 and Weaver v22 (Read 2036 times)

Hey everyone, I'm a new guy. I am borrowing a friends Win 290, it's a .22 autoloader. I need to give it a good cleaning, the owner knows nothing about it. I need to know how to disassemble it and whatever else that is required to clean it. He has a Weaver v22 scope on it, do you guys know anything about these?I need all the info I can get I have no experience with these guns. I ordered an owners manual, but I doubt it's going to get sent cause it's an obsolete firearm. If you know anything please let me know. I really appreciate it.

Hi Mag,
I own a Win 290 and it can be tricky to take apart, and even trickier to reassemble. You will need to take a pin out of the magazine tube and remove the tube. Then pull gently outward on the forearm. As far as the trigger assembly... It is self explanatory.

When you reassemble the the mag tube and forearm, you may have to gently tap the end of the tube with a hammer to get it to seat. DO NOT hit the ferrel on the barrel (what the tube slides into) It will snap off the barrel!!! Believe me, I had it happen to me and had to order a barrel.

No problem, happy to help! One thing I would like to mention. If that gun ever starts misfiring, be sure to check to see if the threded ring that holds the barrel to the receiver is tight. Mine started misfiring and I had no idea what was causing it. After searching the net for a couple of days I found the info I just mentioned.

ok, so everything you said was right, and I really appreciate your help. one question though. is the barrel especially hard to get off? and how do you get the plastic sight on top off. It may just be that the reason the stuff I'm doing isn't working is because of the the fact that it's probably not been disassembled ever, but I feel really dumb about all this. I really appreciate your help.

Yes, the barrel is especially hard to get off! Take the threaded ring loose and then pull out on the barrel and wiggle it while you are pulling. Might wanna spray it with wd-40 or something.

As for the sight, it should be dove-tailed. You can remove a dove tailed sight by bumping it sideways until it slips from the slot. The front sight is dove tailed which has a screw under the front sight bead that holds the ramp on.

ok, thunder, I am stuck. I can't get the barrel off because the back sight is keeping me from twisting the ring off. I can't get that back sight off, though, it is stuck. It won't shake loose. It is a diamond like shaped box with a little gear on top that adjusts for windage, and it sits on top of the of the barrel in front of the receiver. Man, I really appreciate all your help in all this, I would be really going crazy right now without it.

Hi Mag,
The sight on yours is definitely different than the one on mine. Which that doesn't surprise me, they made many variations of the Winchester 190 and 290.
Do you have access to a digital camera? If so you could post a picture of the sight, than I am pretty sure I could tell you how to get it off.
You do have one other option for removing the barrel. This is the option I had to use (My barrel wouldn't come out without doing this.). If you can get a pair of vice grips on the barrel really really tight. Be SURE to put a shop rag around the barrel first!!! Tap the side of the vice grips a little until the barrel starts to come out. That should give you a little space to turn the ring some more. When you run out of room to turn the ring.... Tap the vice grips a little more until you have some more space. Continue doing this until you can remove the barrel.

Yeah, that is the same as mine. I "borrowed" the picture from Auction Arms...LOL

With a rubber hammer or a regular hammer and a piece of wood, tap the sight where the arrow is pointing. It will slide out of the dovetail slot.

ok, thunder, I am stuck. the barrel won't come off no matter what we do. and we have already scratched it some.

So we are thinking of just running the brush towards the action, and then before reassembling the action, we would scrub it out really well. any other ideas, please let me know. By the way, I got the parts list from winchester. It sure would have helped to have it sooner. It took about a week. I dunno what else to do.

Hi Mag,
I dunno what else to tell you about the barrel. If the vice grips and hammer doesn't work, I am at a loss for advice. You can put the vice grips about 3 inches from the receiver end of the barrel without worry of scratching the barrel. The forearm will cover the underside and the plate that goes under the rear sight will cover the top of any scrathes. Put the vice grips on there super tight and hit them with stern taps with a hammer.

If that won't work, you might consider having a gunsmith remove it.
