My vote goes to the Ruger Super Blackhawk. A much stronger frame.

The Ruger is built stronger, I like the way Ruger locks the cylinder on both ends, S&W that is there weakness, only locking the Crane, gets sloppy after a while, but you can't beat a S&W trigger out of the box for performance, I personally accurize all my rugers, they are rough around the edges, they need some TLC, after thats done you have a superior wheelgun, But its all personal preference, both will get the job done. Good luck on your choice. Aim Small hit small. RAMbo.

MY  FAV. 44 MAG  IS MY 5 1/2 SS RUGER REDHAWK . I HAD IT  SINCE .. 1990 AND SHOT A HELL OF AMOUT OF  LOADS AND, SHOTS OUT OF IT, AND ALSO A LOT OF  BIG GAME WITH IT AND NEVER HAD  A PROBLEM WITH IT  & ITS STILL  JUST AS  ACCURATE AS IT WAS THEN ... OH I PUT  A MILLETT ORANGE  FRONT SIGHT ON IT AND A SET OF PACHMARE, PRESENTATION GRIPS ON IT  AS SOON AS I  PURCHASED IT !!!       THE GUN IS JUST THE BEST .. FOR ME!!! 8)

For the price the Ruger Black Hawk is the best hunting and just plinking .44 mag. omn thr market. The triggers arn`t the best, but the can be make descent very easily. I`ve got a 629 Smith that shoots real good, but when I want target accuracy I get out my old Black Hawk.

I have (3) 44 mags for hunting( I didn't plan it that way). 1st was a Taurus M44, 8 3/8"  barrel. This gun shoots very well with a Red Dot on it. It is also very heavy. Next came the Ruger SBH 7.5" barrel/ 2x Nikon scope, not as accurate as the Taurus, but I think thats me as the Taurus is ported. Then I bought a Ruger Redhawk 5.5" and although this gun stings while working up loads at the range, had I owned it first I would never aquired the other 2. While it is true that in hand gun hunting, the single action is the foremost way to hunt, no one talks about misplaced shots, or follow up shots. A tricked out Redhawk Hunter in 7.5" will be replacing the Taurus real quick.

go with the new ruger super baclk hawk hunter it has the scope rings connection to the barrel if you deside to take the scope off u have the iron sights right ther  in a hurry hunting conditions its like 30 sec to take the scope rings off not only that it looks nice in the new stainless with the black lam grips on it
if i was geting another 44 thats the one i would get i got mine 6 months before they released the hunter version so i got the blued
but they 41 in that model is comeing home in 2 months an for x mas im geting the same in a 45
going to shoot sass with them
but what ever one  you get it will be a good gun
just not as good as a ruger if you get the smith lol

It has all been said.   The Ruger is Stronger, the Smith is sexier.

I have both and will hunt with a Smith, but not one of my 29's it will be a PC 657.  That PC 629 looks like a dream.  That is what I would select of the two you offered.

The old Smith/Wessons are a great way to go as well. I recently found a 6 inch unfired nickle 57 that I am sure will be great.
