6 MM PPC or 6 MM BR ????
« on: June 17, 2004, 03:37:10 PM »
If you were limited to a sporter weight barrel ..which of these two 6mm calibers would you choose ? & please explain why...I had a 22-250 on that action & it was way to intense to shoot more than a few shots before the barrel really  heated up & accuracy went to hell...A gunsmith has offered to rebarrel it & the bolt face limits my choices of calibers ...What say ye learned gentlemen here...Mike In Ct...

I don't know that I'm learnedn but my 0.02cents worth:
6mm BR has a standard bolt face-same as 22-250. I don't know that that caliber change will be that much less "intense" than the 22-250 but changing barrel/bedding could improve that situation and the conversion would be cheaper due to less work required to make it function (bolt face, possible magazine/feeding issues)

I would go with the BR round. For 2 reasons. 1. You can get brass alot cheaper for the BR. and 2. The case is lager and you can get alittle more velosity. There is nothing wrong with the PPC case, but they are about 50 cents ea.

Dear Mike,
The PPC is probably a bit more accurate as the benchrest people seem to use it for most of the target stuff. I use it in a Browning 78 and get excellent results on long shots for cougar etc. However, remember!! Larry Bartholeme shot a 2.53 group at 1000 yds with the 6BR. I have one of his targets. The BR case is a lot easier to get cases for and will work a bit better in a standard action without a lot of bolt work. I did a PPC on a Rem 600 and had to put in a Sako type extractor for reliable extraction. Sometimes you skate and don`t have to. Also feeding may be a bit dicey with the PPC unless you`re going single shot and then it doesn`t matter. I have a 6.5BR on a Mod 7 and feeding etc is fine. I, personally, would opt for the BR.

I'm going with the 6 MM BR lapua brass..Redding dies...I found a 6 MM remington barrel Varmint weight 24" long W/ 1 in 9.5" rate of twist..it will set up to handle 87gr spitzers, after cutting & rethreading the somewhat shortened barrel....I'm hoping to use the lighter 75 gr HP for varmints..It will fill in the void between a 7mm - 08 and my 22-250..I see plenty of data for V brand & H brand of powders as well as IMR series...I was hoping to find info for use with Winchester 748. But thats only  because my new 22-250 likes a load I developed with that powder..When you reload there are usually too many choices..I like to use the powder that gives the highest velocity with the least amount of pressure ..usually a near full case to help keep ignition uniform..I find the slower burning powders usually work pretty well if I stay away from the lightest bullets available in a given caliber. So any thoughts you guys have for loading this cartridge I'd like to hear about it...mike in ct

Mike,
Check out your external blastics table. I think that you will find that the 87 grn. bullets has a longer point blank range than the 75`s. They may start alittle slower, but they have a much better BC and they will buck the wind better so you have less hold off when shooting in a cross wind. I shoot a .257, real close in cal. to what your building, and that much difference in bullet weight makes will make a big differance out past 250 yrds., not much under that.

Catfish,
Tell us about your .257 round. I'm looking for a .25 with similar capacity to fit in a mini mauser action.

Shoot,
I have a .257 AI. and I like the 85 grn. Serria bullets pushed at 3,500 fps. It shoots pretty good but the barrel had a bur in it or something when new and I had to fire lap it to get it to shoot at all. That and the smith that built it for me is a real jurk and I will not darken his door steep again, but the .257 AI will get you the same velosity as the .25-06 with less powder, less brass strech, and a better designed case for accuracy. Max. point blank range ( + or - 2 1/2 in) is 305 yrds. It makes a real mess of groundhogs.

What about the 6mm Dasher.  I have a couple of 22 Dashers w/8 twist barrels to shoot up to 80 grain bullets.  The 6mm Dasher is a very impresive round.

Well Catfish this  your old buddy Zermel, just found you here I have been hanging out at the Handi forum. Did not know about this Custom Rifles forum. I bought one of these H&R Ultras for a friend and had one heck of a time with until I got it to shoot halve ass.

I am in the process of building a new 6PPC bench rest rifle on a Stiller Viper action I will have it all done after hunting season. Also have a switch barrel for the 25 Hunter Kodiak in 30BR that is a realty fine caliber to shoot Varmint for score class. I get 3000ft with a 125gr bullet. Have a look at my web site a have quite a bit of new stuff. Best regards Fred M.

More than a dozen powders are well suited for this case. You will definitely find something thet works with every bullet weight out of these three: VV 133, 135 and 140.
