I can't speak for the Ruger.  All I can say is that I personally don't like 'em.  I know that there are die hard Ruger fans out there and God Bless 'em, but, for whatever reason, Ruger's just don't do it for me.

I can talk to you about Remingtons all you want.  The VSSF is a great gun.  I have one in .308 (now discontinued in that caliber) and I love it.  It is essentially a short action Sendero SF.  The only downside is that it is big, bulky, and heavy.  Other than that, is shoots very well, has a durable stock, and looks really cool.

As for the VLS, it doesn't have the fluted barrel, which you may, or may not, need, depending on shooting intervals.  Also, some people like laminated stocks, while others like synthetic.

The choice is yours, but I like the VSSF better (again, IF you don't have to lug it around all over the place.)

On the other hand, you can take a look at the Tikka Varmint Stainless Synthetic.  It is, in my opinion, a better built rifle than the VSSF and costs a little bit less (or at least almost the same.)

chipchip,

Go with the Ruger.  At least if you have a problem Ruger has a Customer Service Department that will take care of you.  Remington hasn't had a Customer Service Department for a number of years now.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog :D

chipchip-

I can't speak for the Remingtons, as the only ones I have are an 870 12 gauge shotgun and the M700ML .50 muzzleloader.

But I can speak for Rugers.

My 20+ year old M77 in 7mm Rem Mag will shot .5" groups at 100 yards with several different loads.  My buddy's 4 year-old M77 MKII 7mm Rem Mag will shoot .4".  I also have an M77 in .257 Roberts that has put 3 of 4 into 0.95" at 200 yards with the 4th opening the group up to 1.85".

For Christmas I got the Ruger M77 MKII VT in .22-250.  This rifle is a shooter - 4 of 4 shots into 0.5" at 200 yards!

As to service, both my hunting buddy and I bought used .357 Mag Blackhawk revolvers.  It turned out both needed minor work, a spring in his and replacing a bent basepin in mine.  No charge, not even for return shipping.

There are good reasons to choose the Ruger once you've satisfied yourself that they can provide the accuracy you want.  They are known for their receiver strength, always a good thing.  And their bolt is one piece, more strength.  (The bolt handles don't fall off Remington bolts very often, but it has happened.)  Then there is the scope mounting system, which is incredibly strong and solid.  And Mauser-style controlled-round feeding and controlled ejection.  There is alo their incredibly good looks, IMHO.
