Anyone have any experience with the .25 WSSM yet?  I'm kind of considering one...leaning more toward the A-bolt, but any info on the winchester super shadow would be helpful also.  Just curious if anyone had one yet, and what your thoughts (good or bad) were...?

Looking at the numbers, it is virtually identical to the .25-06 - which is THE .25 caliber cartridge.  (Granted, the .257 Wby is more powerful, but the .25-06 is the most popular of the .25s.)

That said, I see no real advantage to the .25 WSSM.  Now, if it was a .25 WSM, hence with more velocity - close to a Wby, THEN I would find it more interesting.

It's kinda funny how I like the .300WSM and kinda justify it over the .300 Win Mag, but don't do the same with the .25WSSM.  Thing is, there are very few rifles being built in the .25WSSM and same goes for ammo, where as it's not the case with the .300WSM.

I don't necessarily want to sway you away from the WSSM, but I do want to let you know that you can't go wrong with the 25-06.

Zachary...thanks for your input :grin:   I'm wanting to go to a .25 caliber cartridge for deer; kind of liked the idea of the shorter action, which is why I'm considering the .25 wssm over the 25-06.  I've been wanting an A-bolt anyway, so I figured I might give the new .25 a try...

I only see one benefit of this cartridge...the fact  your getting a rifle that from the factory weighs only 6 lbs. I would rather have a 25-06 or a 257 wthby any day. Now if they had put that 25 on the WSM case now we are talking magnum :grin:  .

That's what people were wanting and expecting, a 25WSM, not a WSSM.  I can tell you right now that if Winchester came out with a 25WSM, I would certainly buy one.

But if we're talking about .25-06 velocities, I'll stick with my .25-06.

Winchester did a survey on which cartridge they should bring out next.  The top two vote gathers were,

1.]  .257 WSM(#1)

2.]  .338 WSM(#2)

After all the voting was done I though they would listen to the public but Winchester pulled their old routine and crossed up everyone(they did this when they came out with the .300 Win. Mag. years ago) and came out with the .25 WSSM.  I will get one, only because I collect factory Quarter Bores, but I am in no big hurry.  Now if it were the .257 WSM it would already have a home.  Lawdog

My only thought is that if you don't reload you might want to compare ammo costs for the WSSM and the .25-06.

I don't think that the price is too different.  Plus, for someone like myself, who only buys factory ammo and shoots about 2 boxes of ammo for a certain gun a year, the cost different doesn't amount to much.

Now, comparing a .300 WBY or Ultra Mag to a .308, then yes, even at the factory level, the cost is going to be significant, especially with the use of premium bullets vs. conventional, plain jane bullets.

I think ammo .25 wssm ammo runs about $20 per box...about the same amount I pay for premium ammo for my .270.  :eek:   oh well, I'm not buying it to plink with...

I still have a custom .257 Roberts that I had built on an FN Mauser action back in '54 and will never part with, but I finally got the yearning to add another quarter bore to my gun cabinet (at a time in life when I should be reducing my inventory). So I ordered a Winchester M70 Coyote in .25 WSSM. I'm told that Winchester won't have a run of .25 WSSM's until July or August, but my dealer faxed my order to them, so hopefully, I'm on the waiting list. :-)

If you are talking about the Win. M70 Coyote in a WSSM caliber I have one in .223 WSSM.  This is a great combo.  Accurate and no feeding problems that many will try to tell you they have.  I like the heavier Coyote but I don't care for the laminated stock or the stainless barrel.  Personal choice, if one likes those stocks and barrels then they are great for them.  The stock I changed and the barrel I am having to live with.  Hope this is somewhat what you were asking, if not ignore this.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

The only ammo I have ever fed my .223 WSSM is reloads.  My favorite load is 40.7 gr. of IMR-4064, for an average velocity of 4,107 fps. behind a Nosler 50 gr. Ballistic Tip bullet.  The average groups I get with this rifle/cartridge/load combination is 0.527".  While not as explosive on Ground Squirrels and Jack Rabbits as the 40 gr. Ballistic Tip version it will make you a better seamstress learning how to patch up Coyote hides for the furrier.  Like I said it’s a personal thing about me not liking stainless and laminated stocks on hunting rifles.  If a person likes them GREAT but I re-stocked my M70 Coyote and am looking into ways of “bluing” the stainless.  So far haven’t found any "bluing" solution I like.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Let you know if and when I do.  Lawdog

I forgot the owner's name, but I sent two rifles to him.  One was a Remington Sendero SF in .300 Win. Mag., and the other was a Winchester M70 Classic Stainless in .338 Win. Mag.

I had them put on their special muzzle brakes, recrown the barrels, and do a trigger job.  With regard to the muzzle brakes, they do such a PERFECT job that you can't even tell the MB is a separate part of the barrel.  It looks like they just drilled holes in the existing barrel because they bead blast everything and is literally looks like one whole piece.
While these muzzle brakes are extremely effective (more than any I have used) they are however, are extremely loud (probably the loudest)!

The owner is really a great guy.  I'm sure he doesn't remember be, but if he does, tell him Zachary in Florida said hi.

I hope everything works out for 'ya Lawdog.

I hope so too.  Getting tired of wearing sun glasses to cut the glare from that stainless barrel.   :-D   Although I prefer a deep blue finish, matte black is livable.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog
