Stock Blanks for Encore?
« on: May 30, 2004, 05:17:02 AM »
As we have seen there are some people here who decided to make their own stocks for their T/C.  Im curious where thaty got properly sized blocks or blanks?  How hard is it to make a stock with the bare minimum of tools?  Is inletting for the Frame bolt tang hard?  Im thinking this could be a fun project, but dont have a lot of tools, and Im not Norm Abrams of the wood working world but can follow lines and snad and whittle.  So whats the word?

New Hamp - you probably don't want to know.  Cut the tree, wait 5 yr. for the wood to dry, cut out a slab with a chain saw....   Its cheaper, quicker, and much easier to work at minimum wage and buy one.   If you decide to try making a stock, get a straight grained piece of walnut. It is the easiest to work with.  Later you can graduate to the birdseye maple and other hard woods that you really need power tools to shape.  It is a slow tedious process with hand tools. :D
Good luck

Well...5 years is a bit much !!!  Once the tree is sawn into boards you have to wait about 9-10 months for it to dry.  Just have them cut a few 2-2 1/4 inch thick slabs.   That should be thick enough for you to fashion a stock.  I am trying a piece of mahogany....hopefully it works...seems to really want to "work" or split.
