How much is a Savage on an auto 5 patent worth?
« on: May 28, 2004, 03:29:26 AM »
I don't visit here very often because most of my shooting is done with rifles and handguns.

I have a 24 year old son who has recently gotten an interest in upland game hunting.  He has been looking for a shotgun but not got one yet because he leaves for Iraq on June 10th.

Last night at our Thursday night silhouette practice, one of the guys brought our this old Savage semi-auto made on a Browning Auto-5 patent.  The stock and forearm have no dings and look to be in good shape but the finish is dull.  Blueing is probably 85%.  The bore is shinney.  It has a bead with no rib and a full choke.  I got to shoot it a few times and it functioned as expected for the 3 rounds I put through it.

Even though I have 3 shotguns that only go pheasant hunting 3 or 4 times a year, my fingers started twitching.  Asking price is $150.  Is it worth it?

You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

Hey Sixgun,
I guess if you want to accept the going prices on internet gun auctions, you might find an example of this Savage auto model to gauge your son's purchase.

If it is the Savage  Model 750 Browning style auto, takedown, 12 gauge, 4-shot mag. I would say it is worth $200-250.  With adjustable choke...$275.

Considering that a single shot will cost you a good $100 nowadays, it is definitely worth the $150. I'd buy it in a heart beat!

If only that old gun could talk!

Thanks for the come backs on this post.  I bought it.  Then this past weekend my neighbor was having a garage sale.  I walked over and looked at what she had out on the table.  She had a Win 1200 in mint condition for $90 and a Sears that looked like a Mod 31 Rem with a vent rib and a poly choke for $90.  Now I have 3 more shotguns and I don't shoot shotguns that much.
