Breath holdin' time
« on: May 27, 2004, 07:39:04 AM »
Our new Encore with .223 26" barrel had to go back to the factory because it wouldn't shoot better than 3" groups at 100 yards.  It's back, after about seven weeks.  The moment of truth comes tomorrow at the range.  Hopefully I will have good to report.

Questor, got my fingers crossed for ya.  Nothing better than an accurate gun or more frustrating than an inacurate one.

It works fine!  T/C recrowned the barrel, doing an excellent job on the cosmetics. The gun now shoots into 3/4" at 100 yards with the first two loads I tried.  T/C really stands behind their products.

This is a lesson in getting a gun well before you need it. I ordered the gun in mid-January and after a wait to get the gun, load testing to find a good load, giving up on finding a good load, and having some warranty work done, it took over 5 months.

I'm satisfied with the results, and I don't hold it against T/C that a minor flaw at the barrel crown slipped past their quality control.  The important thing is that they took care of it with no questions asked. The notes from the gunsmith said he performed the work and then shot two test groups at 100 yards. That's quite a bit of labor time.

Best of all, it shoots good for my son. I found a good load, then put the Bantam stock on it and took my 11 year old prairie dog shooter out to see how he does with it. His first time out we got it sighted in for him at 25 and 100 yards. Then the second time out he shot 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards. He's almost ready.

By the way, the trigger is good on ours, and it didn't need a trigger job.

Congrats.  Always good to hear a positive report about any rifle . . . especially of a name brand that I own. :)
