How does the Encore rifle's recoil compare to that of a bolt action in popular deer calibers? I want my son to have something that he will enjoy shooting.

Stock design is important, but I believe that the conventional bolt-action rifle will have less perceived recoil than the Encore.

Also, for $25 to $30, you can purchase a prefit limb saver recoil pad.  No gunsmithing involved.  They have models for both the wood and synthetic encore stocks as well as many bolt guns.

In addition to the other factors weight will also be imortant.  If you can add a little lead to weight the encore in a few places inside the synthetic stock and forearm it will help compensate for the additional steel on the bolt gun.

I've always found that to be a little counter productive to the intended purpose of a rifle.  Specifically, adding weight where it was not usually placed can cause the rifle, or shotgun, to not be balanced.  Heck, if the gun is too light, then just get a heavier gun.  Plus, adding lead weight (some people actually use lead shot) causes (or at least can cause) noise.

It depends upon how much you use and where you put it.  You can balance out a gun to fit your preferences using thin lead strips, tape, shot or just cast something in a makeshift mould to fit an intended cavity.

It's all a matter of trial and error and experimentation till you find what is right for you at that time and for the intended use.

There are many ways to compensate for recoil, including handloading, mercury inserts, and the ways already mentioned.

:) I'm surprised LongWinters hasn't jumped on this topic! He has put a Limbsaver recoil pad AND a new(heavier) Laminated wood stock on his Encore in 7mm/08 and it STILL kicks harder than all of my bolt actions .30 cal and under.(for the most part WBYs & Sakos)
The geometry of the TCs stock comes up and back in your face. I have one on order from the custom shop(7mm/08) with a 26" barrel, & Simms pad. But I wll be loading 120gr BTs...not 150gr loads.
