Hi
I'm new to handgun hunting and would like to know what options I have for a scope on my SRH 454?. What would you recommend and why.

Tj, I just put a Leupold 2X20 EER on my SRH.  So far I really like it.  I was afraid it would be a pain to use, but after practicing while sitting in front of the TV at night, I can pull it up and have the eye relief just right every time.

I haven't hunted with it yet, but I am looking forward to using it.

The scope itself is very bright and clear, and the eye relief is very forgiving.

You can pick one up at www.midwayusa.com for about $219.00 plus shipping, or you can do what I did and look for one on Ebay.  I got mine (new in factory sealed box) for $194.00 including shipping.

I just put a Burris 2-7X posi-loc on my Ruger SRH 454 9.5". I went with Burris because they have a large field of veiw compared to other scopes, as well as they are one of the most durable. They have a forever warranty, that means for you or the next person who owns it. They also have about the clearest optics and the posi-loc keeps the adjustment on even if you drop it. It is on sale through June for around $278.00 plus shipping at Midway, i missed the start of the sale by a week, so it cost me $13.00 more. The variable power makes the scope heavier than a fixed but it gives you a better choice for the terrain you are hunting in and given the range of the 454 the extra power will come in handy for long shots of a rested position.
I've been handgun hunting for over 25 years now and have looked at alot of different scopes. Sorry guy's but i've never been impressed with Leopold when it comes to clarity or light gathering as far as warranty i have never delt with Leopold, but I have had a freind who delt with Burris and they were great, good service and quick turn around.
The weight of the variable dosn't really bother me but it might bother you. What you need to do is check out a few yourself and find what suits your needs, all we can give you is personal prefference.

I like the Leupold 2x on a revolver. Some prefer variables, but the lightness, compactness, and overall perfection of this scope for handgun hunting with a revolver is fantastic.  I own variables, but not for my revolvers.  The crosshairs on the Leupold are just right for dim lighting conditions in the woods, light gathering is good, it's a very tough scope. I would buy another.

I fully recommend the Leupold line.  They made about the best handgun scope out there, Customer service is second to none.  Baush and Lomb elite series is a nice one also.  I had a burris 2x7 and had nothing but problems.  Will never buy anything else with their name on it.  Their customer service sucks.  I just gave that scope away.  Told burris is wasn't worth batting rocks with.  Local store will not carry Burris anymore after the experiences that I had with them.  A warranty is great on paper but isn't worth crap when the company will not fix anything right.  After 4 tries, you would think a moron could figure it out.  One time, the scope actually came back to me in worse condition.  Looked as if the scope had been dropped on concrete and the scope turret caps would not even screw all the way back down before hitting adjustment knobs and turning them.  Buy a Leupold and you will not be sorry.  All of my handgun scopes are now Leupold.

While I do not have a .454.....I do have a .44 topped with a Leupold 2x20 EER scope.

I am a waterfowl hunter and open sight slug gun deer hunter, so this was my first foray into buying a scope.

I felt I could read and read and read about all of the pro's and con's of the different scopes out there.  But I wanted to talk to someone with real world experience.  So, I talked with a couple of friends that have shot competitively (including Camp Perry), they both said get a Leupold and you won't be sorry.

Leupold's have excellent fit and finish, top quality optics, a crystal clear image and are made in the U.S.  I went with the fixed 2 power because I am not going to be taking shots over 100 yards and I just didn't want to hassle with a variable power scope.  I would be to tempted to crank up the power which isn't always the best thing you can do while hunting Whitetails in the woods of the Upper Midwest.

I kept is plain and simple and have been very happy with my choice.

I've used the Leupold 2X on my 454 Casull and it had to make a trip or two back to the factory for repair.  The good news is the Leupold provided top notch customer service.

I am a big fan of the Burris line. They are durable and well made. I think a 2x or possibly a 1.5 to 4 power variable would do well on that type of firearm.

I've got the bushnell 3200 2-6 on mine.  Love it.  Any of the above scopes would be great as well.

I have a Burris 2x-7x on my .454 Casull.

While the scope has held up extremely well, I am not very happy with the eye relief.  I can see the target quit well when the magnification is set from 2x to maybe 4x, but after that, the scope starts to black out.  As such, anything above 4x is worthless (at least for me).

If I had a chance to do it all over again, I wouldn't buy another Burris 2x-7x.  I think that maybe I would buy an Elite 2x-6x (I think that's the magnification range) because the Elite has constant eye relief.

The point I'm trying to make is, if you are going to buy a variable scope, make sure that you can see properly throughout the entire magnification range.  If not, then you can still buy it, but the extra magnification is a waste of money.

I have a Bushnell Elite on my .454 becuase of the eye relief it has.  Plenty across the entire range as was pointed out in an earlier post.  Also, I am able to shoot five shots into 1.5" or less at 100 yards with my .454.  It has held up well so far.

Over a period of time I have strayed away from scopes on my hunting revolvers and now have just one --- a FA 454 with scope----4x Weaver----in favor of the Leupy 2x it originally had----because of the increased range of the 454, the 4x seems better to me and the variables don't seem necessary---(my 44 S&W 629 has a Holosight and the Ruger 44 SBH Hunter has iron sights) The 2x Leupy just didn't do it for me and now I have two of the sitting in boxes----come to think of it  my 617 could use one and I know my eyes would appreciate it-----as fickle as I am, i will probably change my mind again in a couple of years----too little to do all winter,I guess. :)
