been hanging around these forms for a long time, ran across a sporster rifle at a fair price. mounted a scope and shot this thing with every different ammo I could find, best I could get was a 3inch triangle at 25 yds. though mabe the crown was bad, cleaned barrel real well and ran a lead bullet down the barrel, found a 1.5 inch tight spot about 4 inches from the chamber  anyone ran into this problem?

No, I haven't heard of that before on a sportster.  I've heard the original run of 22lr barrels from nef came with the larger .224 bore (22mag, 22 hornet, 223, etc.) not the smaller .220 (or whatever it is) 22lr bore.

I'd call NEF in the morning, tell them what you found, and ask if you send it in if they'll replace the barrel (they will) and while it's there you might as well get a free trigger job and pay, what is it $58, and get a bull barrel 17hrm barrel fitted (or sportster 22mag or bull barrel 22 mag).

Then you'll have a good shooting 22lr, 17hmr (and/or 22 mag), and a crisp trigger.

That's probably the easiest fix.

What Scruffy said....Ditto.
I didn't have to have a trigger job done on mine when I sent it back.
The day I got it I realized that it was like Momma Bear's bed....just right as it was!

Thanks for the replies, looks like sound advice. a 17 hrm would be nice. I'll let you all know what happens.

Hey, let us know how it turns out!  Have you looked at the postal results posted on the centerfire forum, Jeff223's 17hrm punched an impressive .152" group at 50 yards.  Get ready for some extreme accuracy!  :D

got my sportster back from H&R , have shot about 75 rounds through the 22 barrel, groups are tighten up slow but sure. took you all's advice and had them mount a 17 hrm barrel, can't get the rounds to go off guess i'll have to send it back, unless some one has an idea of how to fix it, from what I can see the transfer bar isn't in the proper place for the hammer to strike the firing pin. any and all advice appreciated. thanks

hi paladin -

i had the same problem with my 17 sportster that i bought last month. it took two or three times to fire one round. i sent it back to NEF and they waved their magic wand over it, chanted some incantations, and behold, the rifle they sent back shoots real nice. it sounds like it time to ship yours back !
