41 mag Contender Loads
« on: May 19, 2004, 03:38:33 PM »
I do not have the Contender book.

Can anyone tell me the min/max loads for a 41 magnum in a Contender for the following?

170 Gr Sierra JHP and H110
200 Gr JHP and H110
210 Gr XTP and H110
215Gr cast bullet with Unique or similar light practice load with same bullet

Finally, I got a box of reloading stuff from a gunshop for a 41Mag that someone dropped off.  There is a bag of 200GR JHP with no maker listed, and I cannot figure out who made the bullets.  There are 250 of them and I would certainly like to find out where they came from.  They definitely look like a nice modern jacketed bullet and appear very new.

Part number in a tag in the plastic bag says 011-23616250
Next line says 410-200grSJH
There is then the bar code with 00011 23616 underneath
Handwritten on the tag is C6.

Anyone have a clue who made these bullets?

.41Magnum loads

The bullets in the bag are probably the Remington bulk type sold many places on the net. A good mild load for Unique is around 6.5 to 8 grains. Try that range and see what you like. A good starting place for the 170grJHC is 24-25gr of H110 and work from there. For the 210grJHC, I'd start at around 21grains and go slowly from there. You  could also consult Hodgdon's website for recommended loads. Good luck with the .41Magnum. They tend to grow on you. Last I looked, my cache of .41Magnums had grown to @40 firearms. :-D

With a 11" 41 mag barrel what kind of velocity should I reasonably be able to get out of the 170 gr bullet?...210 gr bullet?

update on Contender 41 magnum w/Sierra 170Gr JHC

24 Gr H110 in front of a CCI Mag LP primer out of 11" Contender...1893 fps 10 feet from the muzzle.

This load shoots extremely well from my gun.  Good amount of copper fouling, but the accuracy is very very good.  I can shoot around 1" at 50 yards...which is about as good as I can shoot with a 2x scope.

Kinda funny though.  I called Sierra about pushing this bullet at this speed and they told me that was rediculous.  Said that whoever recommended it was stupid because they would get no penetration.  Keep it to between 1100-1300 fps and I would be happy he said.  Yes...he really used stupid and rediculous.  Actually...I think insane was thrown in there before we ended the call.

Well...it is hard to believe that Gary Reeder is stupid since he has recommended this bullet at these kind of rediculous velocities for more than 20 years, but I thought I would try something.

Put three boards totalling 2 3/4" in front of a 50 gallon steel drum and shot it at 30 yards.  Blasted through all 3 boards and made very large jagged holes in and out the other side of the drum.  I find it hard to believe that a bullet that pounded through this much wood and drum would be stopped by a whitetail shoulder or spine.

Any comments?  Anyone have experience with these bullets?  I am also curious how low of a velocity would stil give you expansion with this bullet.

Thanks.

I have a 41 gnr in a 5.5" Redhawk-- the 170 will do 1660 12 feet from the screens -- I took a 5pt deer last season - basiclly head on -- no choice -- I shot him just to the left of center of his chest at 55 long steps - at the shot he dropped down in the front and began to run - large blood trail - at the end of a 105 step run - the 170 went in through a thumb sized hole got bigger and the stopped against the last rib on the inside of his left side- went in about 16 -18 " nothing left but a copper disc flat as flat can be-- much better on broad side shot- - should be plenty -hope this helps

Got the book.  Very nice thing you did.  Now if I could just figure out what to do about copper fouling from a 170 Gr Sierra at 1850 fps.

after shooting a couple thousand jacketed rounds out of your gun the barrel should get a little smother. You might want to back off your load until then. Or you might want to look into lapping your bore. Beartooth bullets sells lapping bullets. take it slow though and dont get carried away with the chore.
