Need some advice on cleaning out chamber for a 223
« on: May 16, 2004, 06:10:06 PM »
I am getting ready to take my new 12FV out to the range but keep running into problem when I am cleaning the barrel on (Savage 12fv .223).  After I get the barrel spotless with some solvent and dry patches and then proceed  to put some oil on a patch to lube the barrel, I keep picking up some debris (suspect it is from the chamber). As long as I run dry patches, there is no debris pickup, it is only when I apply some Hoppes lube oil on the patch that the debris seems to be picked up and deposited in the barrel in front of the chamber.

I suspect the debris from the factory and that the chamber needs a good "scrubbing". (I like to keep my barrels absolutely spotless). I could probably try swabbing the barrel with a dry patch prior to shooting each time to remove any flecks of debris picked up and deposited by the lubricating patch but that seems to be defeating the purpose of cleaning the barrel.

As the chamber is a tad small and tight to get into, if anyone has some advice on how best to scrub out the chamber, I'd be grateful.

Thanks.

A blast of gunscrubber(or carb cleaner) using the tube attachment to direct the solvent into the chamber end should clean the debris from the chamber and bore.  Always clean from the chamber end and take a lesson from the benchrest crowd and just push the patch thru, never draw it back.  The returning patch just redeposites any crud found in the bore.  I suspect a blast of cleaner spray and a dry patch is all that's needed..  Almost forgot, always wipe the rod each time it's removed from the bore.  I prefer a stainless uncoated rod and wipe it clean often..  Also never clean without a bore guide, may do more damage than good..

swab for cleaning chamber

Mountainman,  I made a swab for cleaning out the chamber of my rifles. For all the larger cases for 308 bolt face  I use a 410  swab, and for my 6.5 TCU I use a swab for a .38 or .357.   The swabs have an 8X32 male thread,   I took a quarter inch aluminum rod and threaded it with a female 8X32 thread.   Even put a handle on mine.   These work great, especilally after cleaning the bore.  Just screw the right size dry swab on and clean out everything that's left in the chamber.  You might even use your cleaning rod to clean out the chamber this way.   The swab trick works fine IMO.   Don

Thanks for the advice guys. I figured there had to be a rational way of cleaning it out.
