Compact Bolt Action Recommendations??? 20" .338-06???
« on: May 16, 2004, 10:02:13 AM »
I'm looking for a compact bolt action woods gun in a fairly major caliber.  This would be used for close in black bear, elk and deer.

Thinking about having a Remington 700 or Winchester 70 rebarreled to 338-06 and cut to 20" with the open site reinstalled.

What kind of ballistics would i get with 225, 250 and 275 grain bullets?

Otherwise, what caliber would you recommend?

Also, what should I expect to pay for the conversion?

Thanks,
Steve

You could build one OR buy one of these already built:

Ray,

That could definitely work.

I held one about a month ago, and was really impressed by the feel.

The only thing holding me back is the $675 price tag.  I'm thinking of picking up a nice used 30-06 in a pawn shop for $250-300, then maybe after hunting season converting it to something bigger.

But, I really would like that Remington 673 in .350remington.

Steve,

W E L L....

Here's my solution to almost the same problem - Buy 1939 large ring 8mm Mauser and plan to rebarrel to 35 whelen.  Little known fact = 8x57 and 30/06 have same head size so don't have to change bolt to change caliber.  BUT rifle shoots good with original barrel.  So, got to like the 8x57.  Sporterized it.  Now have bolt rifle with reloads pushing 220 grain bullets to 2,550 FPS.  Not to far from 225 grain 35 whelen! And can still rechamber to 8mm/06 (or AI) or can rebarrel to 35 whelen etc. in future.  Plus 8x57 plinking ammo is still available and cheap - cheaper than I can reload.

Now here's the (also my) down size - You don't buy Rem 673 -  I really like that rifle!  You pass and have to live with that.  Remember Remington use to make a M660 in 35 Rem Mag.   They were and still are very sought after!  But you sure don't see many offered for sale.

I put this together quite a few years ago.  Shoots great nocks em dead.  You could also go with a Savage 116 and Midway is selling 338/06 barrels for cheap money.  All you'll need id an action wrench and a set of go/no-no gauges.

Bigboar,

What gun is your .338-06 built on?

Also, is yours a 20" barrel?

Open sites?

How does it shoot and what kind of velocity are you getting?

Thanks,
Steve

Interarms Mark X action, E.R. Shaw #3 21", Williams open sights, 2-6 Bushnell scope.

200 Nosler BT or 210 Partition,  AA 2700, ~2800fps <1".
275 Speer SS 55 gr, IMR 4350 - 2300fps .5"

I am away from my reloading records now but if you want more send a PM.

pps I have used E.R. Shaw several times cane only give them thumbs up.
