Monson,Palmer or Norwich 445???
« on: May 15, 2004, 07:55:27 AM »
I used to have a DW.... let it get away.  Anyhow,  I'm seriously looking for a 445.  Can't believe I overlooked this cartridge.   I shoot 454 and 475, but that 445 looks like I gotta have one.

Anybody have input on which owner/manufacturer put out the best quality or are there any specific quality problems attributed to any one of them.  I see several 445 on the internet and several of them are Palmer manufactured. Thanks much. PJB[/b]

I don't have any opinions on which factory to get a revolver from, but gotta love that cartridge.  It's the only big bore "super duper mag" that's cheap and easy to shoot, lots of reloading components.  The 454 has more horse power at the muzzle but at 100 yards they are as nearly equal as doesn't matter.

I do have an opinion on brass.  I have some PMC brass that isn't worth a plugged nickle.  Wrong temper, difficult extraction no matter how light the load.  (Bought it some years ago, they may have corrected it since.)  I have no problems with Starline brass.

(The 357 Super Mag is cheap and easy to shoot, but it's not quite a big bore.)

I would recommend the Norwich. I have guns in all three variations, and although I will never part with my Monsons, the Norwich guns have the best finish quality. You also have the advantage of a full warranty with the Norwich guns. The present company will work on old build revolvers, but there is a charge. Some might say get the Monson for a collectable, but the reality is these guns have not held their value as such.
The 445 is a sweetheart of a cartridge. I bought one @ a year ago, I wish I had gotten it sooner. It's a jewel!

Good Luck!
