What kind of knife do you carry when hunting fixed blade or folder? Locked blade or no? Exactly what blade is it, brand and length etc.
I have  a variety everything from a Buck special to a Blackjack copy of a Randel. As well as a lot of spyderco (I am never without my spyderco last year just befour I got ill I managed to obtain within a couple of months to get two of my favorite Spyders a police model in stainless and the new Massad Ayoob Model both with straight blades but these are not for hunting......animals.

a hunter after my own heart. I also carry three.    I have a Case XX that my oldest son gave me for Father's Day in 1972 with money he earned by selling lemonade. I have a Gerber switch blade with the gut hook and two straight drop point blades (I find the saw blade useless) and I carry in my pocket a Boker ceramic blade hunter. I have never run out of “sharp” in the middle of a job and that Boker cuts like a “light saber”.

Over the years, like everyone, I've tried quite a few. The last few years I carry two, A Helle Futura fixed blade, and a Gerber LST Magnum folder. It's hard to beat the Gerber for the money, easy to sharpen and holds a great edge. I really like the Helle's too, available several sources on the internet or sports shows. handmade in Norway, laminate steel blade. It's the only knife I ever had that will get through a whole Elk skinning and boning without sharpening.

I always carry at least 3 knives when big game hunting.2 are fixed blades, 1 large ,1small.I do most of my cleaning with a 3" Gerber folder.
The fixed blade ones were made by my former boss and have served me well for many years. I use the big one to chop branches to make a blind.I tie these where I need them with tooth floss. The smaller fixed blade is used for butchering the animal and other camp chores. I keep the big blade on my pack for easy access.

When hunting I carry a Buck skinner (broad 3/14-4" blade with lots of belly), a folding knife and a wire saw that works great on the pelvis.

Schrade Old timers are my favorite knives. I have four, a 3OT, 12OT, 125OT, and a 9OT.

My primary hunting knife is the 125OT and it is not stainless, I keep a light coating of oil on it to prevent rust. Over the years the blade has developed a darker color, it almost looks stained. To me. that gives it character. Very easy to keep this blade sharp.

I have 3 Gerber Folders.  1 straight edge, 1 with serrated edge, and one with the skinning hook.
Usually 2 go in my pack when I hunt, along with a good diamond sharpener.

While deer hunting , I carry my grandfathers old knife. It is a 4" leather washer handled Kabar. It has a nice carbon steel blade that is easily touched up with a steel or diamond hone and the nice leather handle doesn't slip when wet. I can see the wisdom of this old style of knife as I use it each year.

I also have a pocket knife on me as well. It is an Uncle Henry two bladed small game knife with one blade having a gut hook.

If I am really out there, I will add a mouse hawk to my day pack.

For small game, I carry a Gerber folding knive; don't know the model but it's big. For big game I'll carry either a Buck or a Puma with stag handle; both are sheath knives. In addition, I have a S&W SWAT knife that I carry all the time.

I carry a benchmade liner lock, hen and rooster trapper and for a skinner I had Joel Bolden from the knife forum here on gb make one. He does really nice work at a great price. I've only used the skinner on one deer and one hog... it's still just as sharp as the day I got it. If you want a nice knife and one that no one else will have, I'd suggest having Joel put something together for you. I picked out the design I liked from some pictures I saw on the net and picked the components from a list of items he uses. It turned out great.

Be safe,
Scott

I use a few different knives. I'm really fond of the Cold Steel Master Hunter line. I have them with and without gut hook. My custom knives are by Barry Dawson (one with and one without a gut hook), Chuck Stapel, and I've got at least one Dozier somewhere. If I need to take carcasses apart fast, I use a Wyoming saw. Otherwise, I just use a knife to take them apart. The chain saw was just getting a little too heavy as I grow older! :P

when deer hunting I carry at least 3 knives.
1) is my swiss army knife ( I always have this with me)
2) Wyoming  knife ( the one with the gut hook and on the other a small blade)
3) a cheep no  name folding knife with a 3 inch blade. this is my cut all knife.

I am thinking about doing away with the folding knife and getting a small ka-bar style fifed blade

I have a Gerber Gator folder that will pop the ball joint from a deer without any fear of breaking, and a Cold Steel Master Hunter. There's an old Buck Folder in the console of my truck that's there if I need a third larger knife, and I always have my Gerber Small pocket folder with me.
