Leupold QR mount on Marlin 1895
« on: May 12, 2004, 11:37:45 AM »
Hi all,

could anybody tell me, if it is possible to aim over the original factory sights with a single base Leupold QR mount on a Marlin 1895. I´m using a standard 2-base mount, due a single based mount was not available at that time and decided to do without the open sights. Now I´d like to know, if I should change the base without replacing the factory sights with some higher ones.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Wolfgang

I have the Leupold one piece base on my 1895M. My scope (Schmidt & Bender) didn't have enough vertical adjustment so I had to epoxy shims under one end in order to put me on target at 100 meters. With that arrangement, I would not be able to use iron sights. As I recollect, the base seemed too high to allow for use of iron sights before I made my adjustment to the base.

Woli,
I have used the Weaver base on my 444 taken the scope off and shot the factory sights with no problems. The higher bases would make it impossible to use the factory sights. If you are worried about something going wrong in the field you could always carry a multi-tool and remove the scope and base in an emergency. Or better yet, now you have an excuse to buy another rifle. One with a scope...one with out

If you use the Leupold QR system, you can have an extra scope presighted that is available to install immediately if the first one fails. Actually been there and done that!! It's very handy.

Thanks for your replies! I´m using my Marlin already with a scope and a red dot sight (kind of Aimpoint). That red dot sight (OneV, swedish) stays on top most of the time. But when tracking wounded game in Europe, especially russian boar, a lot of things can go wrong, so Mr. Murphy himself would be impressed! Till now the red dot sight hold up through the thickest brush and even covered with snow, mud and half the inventory of thick brush, the red dot still could be seen. But for the case, your dog keeps the boar busy, you should not be surprized by a broken scope, when you take the gun from your back to shoot! So I see a need to remove it quickly and use open sights!
Keeping a spare scope for that case seems wasted money for me, so I try to find out, how to keep my Leupold QR mount, before investing again in another system.
Until now I´m using a Pump Gun for the tracking, but sometimes you may have to shoot a bit farer too.

I posted my question on marlinowners.com too and the answer was YES, it is possible. For those interested in the problem.

Thanks for your kind replies!
