629 Revolver
« on: May 07, 2004, 05:44:20 PM »
I have a 629 revolver, can somebody tell me what changes were made in the 629-1 series to differate it from the origional 629 series. I have been told this is when Smith & Wesson stopped recessing chambers and pinning barrels on their guns. Is this true? thanks for the answer to my question, I really like my 629 especually with the Herrett grips on it its really accurate and relatively easy to shoot with my favored load. which if anybody cares is 19 grains of 2400 under a 240 grain hard cast bullet either a RN or a SWC. Sometimes I use a Keith bullet (250 grains gas-checked) with the same powder charge. all loads use winchester large pistol primers "for regular & magnum loads"

Deaf, if it's a gas checked bullet, it ain't one of Elmer's designs!

Deaf:  the Model 29 (29-1?) and 29-2 had the recessed chambers.  They stopped recessing the chambers and pinning the barrels with the 29-3.

The 629 (stainless) came out after S&W had stopped recessing the cylinders (I believe).

leverfan is right Deaf, if it's a gas checked bullet it ain't onna Elmer's however, it may be a 'Keith Style' with a gascheck.  And, 19 gr of 2400 is an easy shooting load for that revolver.  I have used 20 gn of 2400 in my 29-2 and that's also a nice load to shoot.  Both loads will do whatever you ask of them.

Sounds like a real nice Smith, Deaf.  (LOL).  Mikey.

I cannot speak to dash numbers as I am at work.  S&W is alleged to have made about 450 629's with both pinned barrel and recessed chambers.

The pinned barrel went away on both the 29 and the 629 first.  I believe around this time they dropped the 6.5 inch barrel in favout of the 6 inch.

Later on the recessed chambers were dropped.

As evidence, I have 2 29's with 6.5 inch pinned barrels and recessed chambers.  I have a 29 and a 629 with 6 inch non-pinned barrels and recessed chambers.  I previouslu owned another 629 with a 6 inch non-pinned barrel and recessed chambers.
