Prices You Pay For Your S&W Revolvers ?
« on: May 05, 2004, 04:52:44 PM »
I made another post about a S&W 629, which barrel length to get, a 4" or 5".

Some of you said the prices I quoted, around $600.00 for each gun, were about $100.00 too much. I live in the Atlanta, Ga. area and all the 629's I have found were around $600.00 or more.

I was wondering where you guys bought your 629's and the price you paid.

If I can find a better deal I will buy it and have it shipped to my FFL dealer.

Thanks Bill

The N frames I've bought this year ranged from $425 to $500. All were plus freight and transfer fee, except the $500, which was FTF - a 625-6 .45Colt MG and a twin to my first one. All were bought from the classifieds on S&W Forum and the origins ranged from Boston to Billings. When you add shipping and a $20-$30 transfer fee, $600 may still be a little high unless the gun is near 100%. It also depends a bit on just how much you want the gun. I think I would have walked across the state for the MG

The price of the 629's were all new guns. I haven't looked for any used ones.

Guess I should have read the other thread. The guns I bought were all older, 1975 and 85-86. Not collector grade, but good, 95%+ examples of fairly scarce items. They seem to be outpacing the new N frames lately. The last new 4" 629 I saw locally would have gone out the door for about $575. The demand for .44 Mag around here is usually taken up by Rugers, so there isn't much push on Smiths. This one sat in the case for a couple of months, and I don't know the final score on it, although I'm told the price as dropped once before it moved. It was the only 4" I've seen there for over a year.

WBill:  something to consider is what you wish to purchase.  I know you have mentioned the 629s, which are stainless steel guns.

A buncha years back when I was thinking about trading my blue steel 29-2 with a 6.5" bbl for a new 4", I found out that the blue steel guns are a lot less expensive than the stainless guns - apparently, everybody wants stainless, thinking they don't rust, and ditching their blue steel guns in trade.  I found that I could not get my value on a blue steel tradeoff and decided not to lose any of the value of the piece, so I sent it back to S&W for some custom work.

I guess what I am advocating here is that you possibly consider a used blue steel S&W.  You may find that they are carried much but shot little and in excellent condition.  A used 4" Model 29 might run you $300.  And, for about another $100 you could sent it back to S&W for a custom shop workover, including barrel change it may cost you a bit more but certainly less than a new stainless.  If you truely want a stainless gun then you will have to pay the piper his cost.  If that is just a leaning, you may wish to consider an alternative and save yourself some good $.

If it is a specific configuaration (bbl, etc) that you want, S&W can do whatever you ask them to do, if it's possible.  I wanted a 4" Mountain Gun bbl on my 29-2 to reduce weight (ounces) and to primarily reduce the length of the barrel and prevent wearing holes in my hip after some 20 years of carrying the thing in the field.  The Mountain Gun bbl was stainless, my revolver blue, so they mounted the bbl, tuned the action, bead blasted the whole piece and blued it to match.  The end result is a 4" 29-2 with the slim Mountain Gun bbl and a matt finish as with the Highway Patrolman.  To me it is as functional as a stainless piece and smooth as can be.  Just my 2 cents worth but I hope this helps.  Mikey.
