NEW SAVAGE
« on: May 05, 2004, 03:34:19 AM »
Picked up my new 93 .17 hmr on monday, love it.I mounted a simmons 3x9x40 on it with some kwik site rings. I have yet to shoot it it will have to wait until saturday. Question when I mounted the scope the rings said
they would fit up to 44mm obj. they fit my 40mm obj. not by much
maybe a 1/16th of an inch. I like when I shoulder the rifle the scope
is nice and low a perfect fit between cheek and stock. I have heard this
makes for the most accurate of guns ( a low mounted scope)
Is this true?

It is generally true. Your scope setting on top of a barrel has a straight line of sight to the target. But your bullet travels in an arc. There fore your scope axis and your bore axis are at slight angles to each other. The scope being level and the bore being slightly pointed upward. The higher the scope is mounted off the barrel the greater this angle becomes a problem. If you are shooting at one specific distance it wouldn't make much difference but at varieing distances it is harder to correctly compensate for. It will also greatly egagerate canting error if your rifle is not perfectly level side to side. Hope this makes sense.   KN
