diffrence between the two Tikka's!
« on: May 03, 2004, 02:17:14 PM »
Hello Fella's

Okay it seems everbody has noticed Tikka rifles now and there seems to be allot of interest out there.  Tikka rifles have been no secret to my family!  My dad has been hunting with a Tikka all of my life!  I think he got his Tikka in the late 70's early 80's.  I first learned to shoot on his Tikka and I purchased my own when it was time for me to buy my own rifle.  I purchased a Tikka Whitetail Hunter sythnetic about four years ago in 7mm mag and has been my go to gun ever since.  The Tikka T3 has intriqued me since its introduction.  I don't understand why they felt it neccesary to replace the Whitetail hunter which was already a fine rifle.  I have had the opportunity to hold a T3 and it seems to be a fine rifle.  The question I have is what is the difference?  Sure its a little lighter and the stock looks diffrent but other than that it seems fairly close to my Whitetail Hunter.  They are actually priced exactly the same!  I bought my Tikka for 719.00cdn and the new T3 list at 719.00cdn so its not price.  There is allot of talk about the stock on the T3 and the materail its made of.  Does anybody out there know what the Whitetail Hunters synthetic stocks are made of?  All the features as far as I can tell listed on the T3 where availible on the Whitetail Hunter.  Can anybody explain the difrence between the two rifles to me?  My wife is going to buy her own hunting rifle this year so I am curious about the diffrences between the two.  We still have a good supply of Tikka Whitetail hunters availible so we are trying to figure out the difrences between the two Tikka's so we can decide which one to buy!

Thanks for the time

I just looked at one of the T-3's last weekend and from what I can see there are 2 differences.  First the different action.  The T-3 has a one size action fits all calibers a/c of a "spacer" that they can vary from one cartridge length to another.  The other, in the sythetic, is what appears to me as different materials.  Personally I prefer the regular Whitetail Hunter.  It feels better to me and I think it comes up to point of aim better.  And it seems, in the states, that it is getting tough to find whitetail hunters . . . which would make me want to get one even more.  I have had one for several years in 243 and really like it.  What caliber is your wife looking for?  I would imagine somewhere inbetween the 7mm and the 243.

I would like to find one in 7mm/08 for my wife if I can, but most likely a 243 because availability is there.  This is a deer rifle and she is recoil sensitive so I figure the 7mm/08 as the top end of the spectrum.  The 7mm/08's and 6.5x55's are really hard to find in Canada in either Tikka configuration but these would be my first choice.  I also prefer the Whitetail Hunter but I must admit it can get heavy on the shoulder when we are in the mountains looking for elk!

You might look for the Remington 700 LSS Mountain rifle.  I am not sure of the cost, but my youngest son shoots one in 7m-08 and it is a very nice shooter.
