Ruger Security Six No. 150XXX
« on: May 02, 2004, 12:41:55 PM »
A good friend acquired an unfired Ruger Security Six, 2.5" , .357 Magnum that is in theoriginal box with the original receipt, having been purchased in 1969 for $143.00(!).

The serial number is 150XXX, that is under 151XXX.

The gun is great,  but the grip angle is ghastly and the grips are also ghastly.  Assisting this neophyte, I have found that there are replacement grips out there, but they are all for Security Six with serial numbers above 151000.  apparently there was some change in the design of the frame.

Does anyone have any creative ideas?  Thank you.

Security Six frame

I owned an early stainless Security Six in the early 1970's.

You are right.  There was a production change to the grip frame angle, apparently in response to many consumer complaints that the grip angle sloped too much and allowed the gun to slide downward in the hand on firing.

The change made it look (and feel) more like the S&W K frame and gave improved gun control.  Replacement grips won't fit the early model because it leaves bare wood overhanging the top frame edge.

As for the factory grips being "ghastly", you are right again.  I had to carve a custom set of grips to fit.

Try to find some Herett's grips that cover the backstrap.  They can be filled with Acraglas reis to fit, and the fix will be invisible.
