Here is my choice..

Reeder Custom Guns. This one happens to be a .41RemMag/.41GNR. You could pick your caliber up to .510GNR.
Love those .41s'

Chris
I do my hunting with single shot pistols, but if I were to hunt with a revolver, I'd want a SS Ruger Redhawk 44 Mag with the integral scope mounts (not the Super Redhawk) with a Nikon 2X scope on top.  The gun would be sent to SSK for an action job to make the trigger more like a S&W.

Myself I Like a SRH 44 Mag with Leupold 2X or RH 41 mag with same scope. But I would recommend what ever make and caliber that you can shoot well.

I would have to say a Taurus Raging bull in the 454. Or the new RB they are comming out with in the 500. It sounds mighty attempting. Hope the price will be cheaper than S&W 500.  :)

Hunting revolvers
« Reply #13 on: May 04, 2004, 10:48:21 AM »
I have 5 with 1 retired. The first id my Super Redhawk bone stock at least for now. I want it customized slightly with the barrel cut to 5.5 inches, Mag-na-ported, recrowned and the origional front sight replaced on the barrel. I already have the rubber hogues on it and after Mag-na-port gets finished it will be perfect.
My second is a 5.5" superblack 44 magnum with fluted cylinder oversized grips to control recoil and a miller rear sight. I also hade a custom full fpap holster made for this gun (and as a bonus it also fits all my shorter blackhawks as well).
My third gun is a 6 inch S&W model 629 with herrett grips with some 30 lpi checkering which doesnt hurt with magnum loads. The gun is otherwise factory stock. Its a really sweet lightweight 44 magnum more for carrying than shooting full loads but will handle them easily when necessary.
The 4th gun has been modified more than the others. It started live as a 3 screw 41 magnum with a 6.5" barrel. The action has been switched back to its origional form from the Ruger safty transfer bar conversion. with a super blackhawk hammer in place of the balckhawk hammer for easier cocking. the action was smoothed and sweetened to a nice crisp letoff yet still safe. A Keith style belt mountain basc pin in Stainless replaced the regular Ruger base pin tightening up the cylinder nad making the gun tighter and have better lockup for more accuracy. And last but not least I installed a Bullseye ejector rod to make removing the empties much easier and faster. the gun is carried easily in a Ruger practial holster made by bianchi for ruger in the early to mis 80's  Its the perfect full flap holster for the 6.5 and 7.5 guns.
The retired gun has 2 pigs and 1 ram to its credit and has been retired from hunting to cowboy shooting and plinking. The gun has a Stainless grip frame fitted and high polished. The hammer has been jeweled and the action worked over by Art Leckie of Behlert Custom. Grips are checkered fake ivory and are perfect for its present use. Oh yes the base gun is a 7.5 inch Ruger Blackhawk convertable in 45 long colt and 45 acp.
Its one of my nicest guns and has been regulated to factory of slightly higher loads. No more magnum pressure loads for this gun, thats what I have 3 44 magnums and a 41 magnum for.
So these are my hunting revolvers. So far no flap holster for my Super Redhawk as yet but after its finished I may have one custom made if I can't find a factory one to fit it. As for the 629 there is a flap holster avaiable for it which I will purchace as soon as I reasonably can considering I am retired and on a fixed income. My firarms purchaces may be at a halt for the most part. but I may be able to customize the few I do have to make them better than factory guns.

I like my little old SRH 454 Casull using Hornady 300gr XTP's in front of 30grs of win296 nice stout round can take anything in my neck of the woods, I put Hogues rubber grips on the SRH and a green fiber optic frontsight easy to see, I use a Bandito Holster great carry as well.
Got to love it. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

Hmm. I would hazard my opinion to say that a Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 Casull. I would have the scope rings with either a 2X Burris or a 1.5 -4X Variable Burris.

I would also see about getting an extra set of rings in 30 mm to have an electronic sight like an Aimpoint sighted in for the gun.

I do believe such a rig would be suitable for much of N. America. In fact, I would also say Africa as well.

I've packed a SBH .44 Mag for many years using LBT 320 Grn. WFNPB bullets,
When the SRH .454 Casull first appeared I snatched it up and used Stoner Hard Cast 360 Grn. FPGC. (a beautiful combination)

In January I fell of my rocker and picked up the .500 S&W and have worked up a load using Cast Performance LBT 440 Grn. WFNGC bullets,
so far I have gone through 200 rounds of that stuff and decided that will be the optimum load for anything that presents itself in the sight picture.

One thing I gotta mention is,  the Casull kicks (more of a sharp whack) slightly more with 360 Grn. Hard Cast than the .500 S&W with 440's (kind of a great big shove) , I guess the brake works!

I do have a scope for my casull, but only use it in a baiting  or stand situation, when still stalking I use the open sights for fast sight accusation. I have used revolvers for hunting deer&bears for many years and have been quite successful in doing so, just takes allot of practice and years of shooting, much harder than a rifle bye far. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

For me I will pick my Dan Wesson 445 supermag topped with a burris 2x7 scope.  Loaded with barnes X 225 grainers at about 1775 fps average.   Will take anything in my neck of the woods.

Love those Dan wessons

My favorite hunting gun now is my 500 S&W Mag.
I just finished beadblasting it with (fine aluminum oxide grit) the sight is the Ultra-Dot red dot in Weigand Combat Handguns Integra-Mount system.
The stocks are Jordan Troopers from Herrett's Stocks.
I took two deer last gun season in Ohio. I cast my own hardcast bullets from a 400gr. FPPB mold from Mountain Molds.

cknight98, if your the same guy that's on the S&W forum, I'm surprised you don't list the S&W 500? Are you the same guy?

I’m sure there are bigger ultimate revolvers out there the .454 Casull, 475 linebaugh, 480 Ruger, or .500 S&W comes to mind. But the Ruger Blackhawk .45 colt is all the gun my hands can handle with a 300-grain FP being pushed in the 1200 fps range.

Not sure if it's the ultimate or not, but for whitetail my favorite is Blackhawk in 45 Colt, 5 1/2'' barrel. Just recently got bit by the 500 S&W bug also. Should be able to pick it up this week.

Jerry. I like the looks of the finish on your 500. How do you like the red dot scope. I had one for a while on my 454 RB but it covered up a 9" paper plate at about 75 yds, too big of a dot. Would consider another one if it were smaller.

If we're talking Big Game,

Gary Reeder's Classic .475: an action like butter, black satin finish, gold bead front and v-notch rear sight, and all the wallop a man can ask for in a 5-shooter!

On a more practical note. In my opinion, you just can't beat a 5.5" Single Action, preferably five shot, .45 Colt with Cast Performance 330gr WNFP @ 1400fps. Large holes through and through is the only way!

If you haven't already been, check out Reeders website: www.reedercustomguns.com

jar,
I like the Ultra-Dot fine, it has an 4 min. dot, which means it covers 4" at 100yds.  I took many deer with it on my .44 and two last year with it on my 500. I have an Laser-Aim red dot with a 3 min. dot on another .44, but I just decided to use this one on my 500, it's worked out fine.

BTW, I set a 4 gal. pail out at 130yds. (measured with a laser range finder) and drilled it dead center, with my load and the Ultra-Dot on the 500.
