Shipping guns

If I want to ship a gun (a shotgun or .22) to a family member in another state is that legal? Do I just wrap it up and ship it UPS? What do I do?

Shipping guns via BATF's rules.

No, I wouldn't do that, according to BATF laws, a non licensed individual(non FFL) can ONLY ship guns out of state to an FFL dealer. They make no mention or exception for family members. I suggest you go to their website(use this link):
http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#b17
and read section B carefully, so you know for sure.

It's a lot easier that you think. The person you are shipping to must send you a signed in ink FFL from a dealer near him.You can now send it UPS to that dealer only.I can ship a gun UPS from here in NY to UTAH for about $13.00.If you ship a gun to be repaired you do not have to go thru a FFL dealer.

I was not considering shipping a gun. I have a nephew that I am going
to purchase a gun for (his first). He lives in another state. I will see him
in two months but since I am not a resident of the state where he lives
I will have to have my sister actually make the purchase.Thats fine
but I kind of wanted to make it a special event that just me and him
have together. Another plan is maybe go and have my sister buy it
and just bring it over for a suprise. I grew up in a family that did not
hunt or shoot i had a passion for it very early, and was not until I
went into the Army that I met people that I learned from.
Now I have a nephew that has the same passion and I want him to get
all he can from it even though we live 1300 miles away.

And I just wanted you to be up on the laws involved so you wouldn't become another innocent citizen being scrutinized, or worse yet arrested by the BATF. No one should EVER forget what the BATF did to Randy Weavers family on Ruby Ridge in Idaho!!!!!!! It's already been a few years, and the BATF would love it to just be forgotten, but we should never forget what they can do to an innocent family on the suspicion of illegal firearm trafficking/sales. A moment of silence for Randy Weaver please, for the loss of his wife and son on that tragic day.

What happened at Ruby Ridge?

I remember hearing something about it when I was a little kid.

If you are just driving it there I wouldn't worry about it.I would make sure that if you have any ammo it is not with the gun.
